NTL and BT set to increase broadband speeds

Posted: Friday 29th October 2004 by Sam
In the past few days we've heard rumours of NTL boosting their maximum broadband speed from 1.5Mbps to 3Mbps. Some have suggested that this brings them closer in line with Telwest, who have been offering 3Mbps BlueYonder services since this summer. These upgrades by NTL have apparently been made possible by wide-scale network improvements over the summer. More details of the NTL news can be found at Cable Forum.

UK-Bug are also reporting that BT Wholesale has invited ISP's to trial its upcoming Home 2000 service. The product, like all other Home products, will operate at a 50:1 contention ratio. Existing 2Mbps Home products out there (i.e. PlusNet's, Central Point's), will either use a Office 2000 line (with 20:1 contention) or DataStream. Standard pricing for the Home 2000 trial is unclear, although Capacity Based Charging will be the same as the Home 250, 500 and 1000 price - £8.40 +VAT. Further to the UK-Bug article, we have heard that the trial is expected to start at the end of November, with a full launch penciled in for Spring 2005.
