LLU is the flavour of the month

Posted: Monday 20th September 2004 by Sam
HomeChoice, Easynet, Bulldog and now NTL have all issued announcements about new LLU rollouts this month. It seems that the recent LLU price cuts by BT really are attracting new investment. Anyway, a brief summary of the LLU activities of late seems to be in order...

HomeChoice have confirmed the deployment of LLU services to Deptford, Dulwich, New Cross and Greenwich "soon", with other areas (further afield than London) to follow in due course.

Easynet are seeing good financial returns on their current LLU deployment of 214 exchanges. Whilst this site only lists 201 at present, be sure that I'm working to obtain the remainder of the LLU locations.

Bulldog, who have had more than their fair share of problems recently, are investing £100 million in deployment to a further 400 LLU exchanges. The next stage of their LLU rollout has been expected for some time, with various figures and maps grinding their way through the rumour mill, but this is far more than anyone expected.

And finally NTL today announced that it would be spending up to £65 million deploying LLU services to 300 exchanges around the UK. This should increase NTL coverage by 2 million, taking the total to approximately 10 million homes.

Many have said that if we want to see faster and more innovative broadband services in the UK, then local-loop-unbundling will be the driving force. Whilst we're not there yet, things are certainly gathering pace and heading in the right direction.
