New real-time pre-registration system (well, almost)

Posted: Wednesday 31st March 2004 by Sam
Well, I said I had a surprise this evening, and here it is... (Although at ten to midnight, I am cutting it a bit fine!)

This site has now taken over 50,000 pre-registrations. As many of you have requested, I've been trying to significantly improve my registration system by making the process realtime. Well, I'm pleased to say that this morning the guys at Eclipse delivered a system which supports this! Many thanks to Eclipse for this!

So what does this new system do? Well, with the old one, a user would enter their pre-registration, it would be added to my database, forwarded to Eclipse twice daily in bulk, and then manually uploaded to BT. This process used to take anywhere between one and four days.

The new method takes your registration, immediately sends it to a new system at Eclipse's end, who then immediately forward it to BT. Finally, an automated script runs every 10 minutes to update the data for all exchanges who have recently taken registrations.

In testing this evening, this process took no longer than 15 minutes for a registration to be sent from here, and then appear back on this site. Keep in mind that your registration is sent immediately, but the delay in the data appearing on this site is due to me having to update from BT.

The new registration system is currently implemented for the singular pre-registration form only. I'll be implementing it for the bulk-registration system in the next day or so.

One final important point: If you're using one of my registration forms on your site, you do not need to change anything!. All of the changes are at my end.

Anyway, please let me know if you run into any problems.
