Update on copper overlay in TPON areas

Posted: Monday 22nd March 2004 by Sam
With the focus of the UK broadband industry currently fixated on getting more areas enabled, it is all too easy to forget about those who cannot received service from an already enabled exchange.

One of the reasons that you might not be able to receive broadband ADSL on your line is because you may have a "TPON" phone line (Telephony over Passive Optical Networks - a fiber optic line basically). These lines are currently incompatible with ADSL.

Well, following numerous requests for updates on the copper overlay which is going on in some TPON areas (so that lines can support broadband via a traditional copper line), I think I have something that may interest you all. A couple of weeks ago I received details of BT's TPON plans which are dated as February 9th 2004. I've now been able to verify the accuracy of this information, and have made a document available on this site.

This is a situation that is becoming an increasingly common problem amongst potential broadband users. BT Wholesale are apparently working on this, along with increasing the current RADSL limits, under the "100% Reach" project.
