UPFRONT: Next Year on NBC

29781376.jpgYesterday NBC unveiled their plans for next fall. Here’s what we’re looking at: Friday Night Lights lives on, Studio 60 does not. And we get a six-episode Heroes spin-off called Heroes: Origins that will consist of stand alone episodes focusing on characters that haven’t yet made the story lines. Because everybody’s lovin’ interactivity these days, viewers will get to vote one of the characters onto the main show. NBC also upped the number of episodes of The Office we’ll get next year, tossing in a couple more half-hours and five super-sized hour long episodes. Generally speaking, I’m all for more of both Heroes and The Office, seeing as how they’re consistently un-sucky. The only fear is that making more will stretch the creators thin and the quality will suffer. Then we’d just get more of less. And that’s no good.

As far as brand new shows goes, here’s the newness:

Chuck: From Josh Schwartz, the man we first thanked, then blamed for The O.C., comes an hour-long comedy/spy show about a lovably dorky tech support guy (aka action hero Seth Cohen) who accidentally has a spy database embedded in his noggin. As far as premises go, it feels like it’s trying too hard, and if it was a movie, there’s no way you’d go see it. But still, some of the clips are kinda funny. Certainly better than what you see with a lot of new shows, so it’ll probably be worth checking out. Watch the clips for yourself here.

Journeyman: A newspaper reporter finds himself periodically hopping backwards in time which lets him do chummy things like save people’s lives. Unfortunately, all the space/time bending doesn’t leave much room/hours for his old lady, so his quantum leaping takes a toll on his current relationship. Again, the premise doesn’t exactly grab me, but the clips aren’t bad. (You have to keep in mind when you watch these, that series often take a couple episodes to get into a groove, so if you find a pilot episode with glimmers of goodness, that’s an encouraging sign.) Anyway, here’s the footage.

Life: Here’s the deal, he was a cop who spent 12-years in jail after being wrongfully accused of a crime. Now he’s free, and he’s back to being a cop. Plus he’s got a great sense of humor! And he’s philosophical! And quirky! But when he wants to, he can touch people. You know, because of the emotional depth he got while suffering in the joint. The show’s tagline: “Life was his sentence. Life is what he got back.” I think it looks like crap. You be the judge.

Bionic Woman: I’m reserving judgment on this one. NBC is reportedly re-jiggering the pilot, which could be good, because some of these scenes are terrible. Like when the newly bionic woman has to deal with the deaf and troubled younger sister she looks after. Ugh. And check out the footage below of her discovering her bionic powers. It’s unintentionally hilarious. That all being said, go here to watch the other footage. The throwdown she has with an earlier bionic woman (Yup, that’s Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica) looks pretty damn cool. Makes me excited for the fall…
