Gilligan's Island
Gilligan's Island had a simple but comedy-rich premise: Seven castaways get stranded on an island after their pleasure boat hits bad weather. The show was a ratings success, but it was canceled in '67. After its prime-time demise, the show's actors suffered severe typecasting and personal problems, including divorce, drug arrests and illness. In the late '70s, a TV movie about the rescue of the castaways sparked new interest in the series, which had become a syndication powerhouse.
What You Don't Know:
Russell Johnson appeared in many Western films before starring in Gilligan's Island as Roy "the Professor" Hinkley Jr. In the '53 version of Law and Order, his character shot Ronald Reagan's in the shoulder.
Dawn Wells, who competed for the 1960 Miss America title as Miss Nevada, received the cast's most fan mail.
The man-made lagoon for Gilligan's Island cost CBS $75,000. It is still on CBS' lot in Studio City, California.
Bob Denver's son Patrick played a miniature version of his dad in a dream sequence on the show.
Alan Hale was on location in Utah filming a movie when he got a call to come back to Los Angeles to do a screen test for Gilligan's Island. Hale rode a horse to the highway, hitchhiked to Las Vegas and flew to L.A. to test with Bob Denver; it was evident right away that the duo had chemistry.
