Locate Duplicate Files

We all collect code, programs, documents, etc. But over time those files tend to show up multiple times across the systems. So how do you stop it?

Personally I use finddups because it has the ability to use CRC or hash functions to help narrow down your search. Even if a file has been renamed, (which always occurs) finddups will report it to you.

How?
Finddups can accomplish this by several user selectable methods ranging from "better double-check" to "extremely" reliable. By using user selectable CRC or hash functions, finddups will generate an array of checksums or signatures for each file within the given search path. After the generation cycle completes, finddups cross references the array looking for duplicate checksum/signatures. Using this method, duplicate files can be located even if it has been renamed!

You are free to choose any external checksum or hash signature function that you find most reliable (sum, cksum, md5sum, etc). Finddups has the ability to use any user configured method. For historical reasons, I have left the original internal CRC-32 checksum routine intact for DOS platform users that have no reliable port installed, and just for fun.

What does finddups require?
Finddups has been tested and is known to run on the following platforms with PERL installed:

  • AIX
  • BSD and variants (BSDi, FreeBSD, etc.)
  • HP/UX
  • Linux
  • SCO
  • Solaris
  • SunOS
  • Windows 95/98/NT
  • and Windows 3.x
