Moeller catches opportunity
 chad moeller
Moeller is ready for an increased workload.
Chad Moeller hopes to make the most of his opportunity as the Diamondbacks' No. 1 catcher, the East Valley Tribune reported. Rod Barajas -- who had been slated to share time with Moeller this season -- will be on the disabled list through at least April 21 because of a strained left hamstring. "It's an opportunity to get back there," Moeller told the newspaper. "Nothing about me wants to be a backup catcher. Without question I want to be a starting catcher and I want to be out there every day." The initial plan was for Barajas to catch Elmer Dessens and Curt Schilling, giving Moeller about 60 percent of the playing time.

Lyle Overbay couldn't stop smiling after hitting his first major league home run April 7 against the Dodgers -- a pinch-hit, game-winning two-run shot in the 12th inning. "You kind of dream about it," said the 26-year-old rookie after Arizona' 6-4 victory. "I was wondering if it would ever come or not." Overbay began the season as Arizona's first baseman, but was just 2-for-15 this year (.133) and 4-for-27 as a major leaguer (.148) when he came to the plate. "I've been feeling better in the cage,'' he said. "It's kind of a relief to take it out in the game.''

NEWS AND NOTES
  • The Diamondbacks recalled RHP John Patterson from Triple-A Tucson on April 11 and sent RHP Scott Service back to the Sidewinders.
  • 2B Junior Spivey, mired in a 1-for-17 slump, got the day off April 9 against the Dodgers. "I'm not getting the job done, that's obvious," said Spivey, who hit .301 last season. "I feel fine, I'm just not having much success right now. I'll pull out of it, I'm not worried."
  • Scott Service got the save April 7 against the Dodgers -- his first save since Sept. 22, 2000, for Oakland at Seattle, and the 16th save of his career.
  • The Diamondbacks moved RH reliever Bret Prinz (groin) from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL on April 4. Prinz was injured while pitching to Hideo Nomo in the eighth inning of Arizona's Opening-Day loss to the Dodgers. Prinz collapsed in pain and had to be helped from the field.
  • The Diamondbacks released LHP Greg Swindell on April 4, allowing him to sign with any team. Swindell, 38, appeared in 225 games in his four seasons with Arizona, going 8-14 with four saves. Last season, he threw only 33 innings because of shoulder and back injuries and was 0-2 with a 6.27 ERA.

    SCOUTING REPORT (FROM STATS INC.)
    Luis Gonzalez, 2002 Season
Perhaps pressing in hopes that the Diamondbacks would extend his contract beyond 2003, Luis Gonzalez was not up to his 2001 standards for most of last year, especially in the first half. His home runs dropped from 57 to 28 and his slugging percentage from .688 to .498. In the season's final week, ...
