Closer Robb Nen won't come off the disabled list April 14, when he's eligible, and he might not even be activated by the end of the month, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Nen still feels discomfort in his right shoulder, and the Giants have backed off from their original prognosis that Nen would miss two to three weeks. "It might be a little more than that," said trainer Stan Conte, who has overseen Nen's rehabilitation since his arthroscopic surgery in November. "It's not completely where we want it to be."

Scouting report on King Tut (center) found in hieroglyphics on the Great Pyramid's walls: "Good field, no hit …"
What do Barry Bonds and ancient Egypt have in common? According to Egyptologist and baseball fanatic Peter Piccione, there is a clear connection between the Egyptian ritual of seker-hemat, "batting the ball," and America's national pastime. "Did the Egyptians invent baseball?" asks Piccione, who teaches comparative ancient history at the College of Charleston. "No, they didn't, but their bat and ball games do show similarities to baseball, stickball and softball. … Sport and religion were not mutually exclusive of each other 5,000 years ago and in many ways, they still are not today." Just look, he says, at the idolization of Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and Bonds.

NEWS AND NOTES
  • The Giants began the season 10-1 for the fourth time in their history and first since moving to San Francisco 45 years ago. They also won 10 of their first 11 games in 1918, 1932 and 1938 when they were in New York.
  • The Giants placed RHP Ryan Jensen on the 15-day DL on April 10 with strained muscles in his lower back. RHP Jesse Foppert was recalled from Triple-A Fresno. The highly regarded prospect is expected to make his major league debut on April 14, filling Jensen's No. 4 spot in the rotation.
  • The Giants beat the Padres 15-11 on April 9 in the highest-scoring game at 3-year-old Pacific Bell Park. The 26 runs surpassed the previous high of 22 set in the Dodgers' 14-8 win on June 26, 2001. There were 31 hits -- 16 by San Francisco -- and wasn't a 1-2-3 inning until the top of the sixth.
  • LHP Jason Christiansen began his rehab assignment April 9, pitching one inning for Single-A San Jose. He underwent ligament reconstructive surgery on his left elbow last May 30. The Giants hope he can return to the team June 1.

    SCOUTING REPORT (FROM STATS INC.)
    J.T. Snow, 2002 Season
J.T. Snow had only one above-average month, when he hit .326 in July, and batted .246 for a second straight season. It represented another precipitous drop from his 1997-2000 numbers, when he averaged 22 homers and 94 RBI. But last season, Snow could not use injuries as an alibi for his poor ...

    INSIDE THE NUMBERS
The Giants' 7-0 start broke the San Francisco record for perfect starts set by last year's 6-0 team and matched the third-best start in franchise history, turned in by the 1930 New York Giants. The 1918 Giants own the modern franchise record of 9-0. The 1884 New York Gothams opened 12-0 to establish the all-time record.
