Lawsuits target Allegheny parent
Financial problems at the parent company of Allegheny Power have spawned at least 16 class-action lawsuits since Nov. 4, when the utility and power trader said it would delay filing its third-quarter earnings report.

Penn State to stop using Social Security numbers as identifiers Starting in 2004, Penn State students, faculty and staff may have new nine-digit numbers to memorize. The university announced Wednesday that in response to a growing need for electronic security and confidentiality, it will stop using Social Security numbers as the primary way of identifying people.

Holiday feasts are not for pets
The arrival of the holiday season will mean an increase in the number of pets visiting veterinarians for upset digestive systems due to consuming "human food" items. There are numerous tempting dangers for dogs and cats at this time of year.

Off Centre: Learn ups, downs of owning pets
"But if you get me a dog it'll help me be more responsible. ... " Unfortunately this old line has long since ceased to work. So how does one go about convincing their parents to let them have a pet? It's a question children and teenagers alike have struggled with for centuries.
