Big first half propels Rams to victory

SPRING MILLS -- Penns Valley hit eight three-pointers in a 48-point first half and cruised to a 69-50 victory over Claysburg-Kimmel on Wednesday.

Carl Anderson paced the Rams with 15 points, nine rebounds and five steals. Andy Benz made four 3-pointers and had a career-high 14 while Curt Royer had eight points, six rebounds and four steals. Nate Kerstetter connected on two 3-pointers and finished with 10 points for the Rams.

"We had a solid first half," said Penns Valley coach Darrin Hazel. "We really pushed the ball up the floor and did a nice job of hitting our threes. Kids like Royer and Benz played well on the offensive end."

Penns Valley (2-1) will play host to Mount Union at 6 p.m. Friday.

Bellefonte too much for St. Marys

ST. MARYS -- Andy Gaebel poured in 34 points and Greg Daughenbaugh added a career-high 18 as Bellefonte beat District 9's St. Marys 74-62 on Wednesday.

Gaebel, who made five 3-pointers and finished three points shy of his career high, benefited from a couple adjustments he made to his shot.

"He worked on a couple things," said Red Raiders coach Dan Miller. "He's such a pure shooter and he got some nice looks tonight."

When Gaebel wasn't hitting from outside, he was driving and dishing to Daughenbaugh, who scored no more than two points last season.

Freshman Jordan Williams added nine points for Bellefonte, which plays at Huntingdon at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
