Record season for bear expected
The statewide bear season begins Monday. The harvest during the past two Pennsylvania bear seasons was the highest on record and Pennsylvania Game Commission officials expect another record season this year.

Teen used to hitting her mark
It's a few minutes past 5 a.m. Saturday at the Petrick home in rural Palisade, and already Autumn Petrick is thinking big. This is Minnesota's firearms deer opener, and she's talking about the 10-point buck she and her dad have seen roaming their property this fall.

Pocket Guide to Field Dressing a Deer
Just in time for deer season, Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences is offering a free pocket guide on how to properly field dress a deer. Catherine Cutter, assistant professor of food science, developed the guide, which is small enough to fit inside a hunting license holder to be readily available when a hunter needs to refer to it.

Nature's Corner | American bittersweet
The red and orange berries of American bittersweet add natural color to Thanksgiving wreaths, centerpieces and other autumn decorations. In fact, 50 years ago the shiny fruits were the mainstay of such fall decor, but today, bittersweet is on the decline in Pennsylvania and throughout its range east of the Rocky Mountains.
