Is this the world's first production double-childback triplet? Designed to keep the family together when the children get too old (and heavy) to sit passively in a trailer, yet are too young to ride their own bikes, the St John Street Cycles Me'n'u2 triplet keeps adult pilot and two child stokers together on one bike. While the adult keeps complete control, the children feel part of the team, and simply by raising the saddles and adjusting the stoker bars for reach, many years of growth can be accommodated. The rear and mid riding positions are carefully-designed for smaller riders, with specially-machined 120 and 140mm double-drilled cranks.
If there's just one child to accommodate, a Voyager childback tandem may be the solution. This model has been carefully designed to bring the price of tandeming down, without affecting safety or riding pleasure. It uses low-cost components where this is appropriate - the transmission - and top-quality parts where safety is involved: brakes, rims and headset. The frame is butted cro-moly steel. The Voyager range is available from stock in three sizes for adults, as well as in two childback sizes. There is also a higher- specification 'Enduro' version, with drop bars, carriers, mudguards and lighter rims.
Outgrow the Voyager, and SJSC will part-exchange it for a Discovery, their top-of-the range touring tandem. Several are known to have circumcycled the world, and an even lighter, stiffer and more resilient version is also available in Reynolds 853 tubing. Soon to be introduced are three new tandems, including an off-road tandem with 'the fattest tyres available'! All of SJSC's tandems and triplets can be supplied with S+S Bicycle Torque Couplings. Using this system, a tandem frame can be split and fitted into a 66 x 66 x 25cm (26 x 26 x 10") suitcase, making regular use of public transport a practical proposition, and taking your tandem away from the not-so-tender care of baggage handlers.
