Will Margaret survive the deprivation and cruelty of Hitler's Reprisal Camps?
Beyond the Wire. The true story of a conveniently forgotten war crime as one young girl struggles to come to terms with the loss of her mother.
"I was a child when they came, men with marching feet and loud guttural voices. Men with steel helmets and guns. By the end of the war I had been occupied, deported and imprisoned.
There was little food and at first, there was nothing from the Red Cross. The toilets were insanitary slits in the concrete over a hole.
I can see her now as she lay so still, her rich brown hair sprayed around the pillow. I wanted to run to her, climb on the bed and bury my head on her shoulder. But even as I pulled towards her she turned her face to the wall."
An Eye-opener. Unforgettable. Thought-provoking. Heart-rending.

This story which is based on true events of what one family went through during the second war brought a lot of emotions to mind while reading it. Frederick the father worked so hard to build up a business from nothing with the help of his wife Ruth. They had a daughter Margaret. The whole family was taken prisoners and they lost everything. You get a glimpse of how bad it was in the two prison camps that they were held in. Reading between the lines I think that it was even worse than what has been described by Margaret the daughter who narrated this book.
I think this lady was very brave to relive some of the horrors of her life and bring to light on how the Guerns were the forgotten people during and after the war.
