Die Bilder sollen die Menschen dazu bringen, über ihr Leben nachzudenken, sie stellen bestehende Normen in Frage und lehnen sich gegen Autorität auf. Für sie ist Graffiti kein Mittel um cool, avantgardistisch und taff zu sein; es ist ihre Leidenschaft.

Als ihr geliebter Rust bei Verwicklungen mit einem Sicherheitsdienst tödlich verunglückt, wird Vergeltung plötzlich zum zentralen Thema für Metro. Die Intensität von The Girl and the Bomb wird durch die verschiedenen Erzählperspektiven getrieben – wir erleben die Geschehnisse durch Metros Augen und auch durch die Augen des Wachmanns, der in der besagten Nacht Dienst hatte. Dem Leser wird dadurch die Brutalität des Ereignisses gänzlich vor Augen geführt. Als Metro den Wachmann erniedrigt, sieht man, welchen Effekt das auf seine kleine Familie hat, und am Ende, als sich die Spirale der Gewalt immer mehr zuspitzt, kann man kaum noch unterscheiden, wer die Ursache des Ganzen ist.

Ich möchte an dieser Stelle nichts vorwegnehmen aber so viel sei verraten: Metros Talent als Künstlerin ist ihre übersinnliche Kraft und ihr Meisterwerk hat einen unauslöschlichen Fleck auf mir hinterlassen.

Jari Järvelä has written novels, short stories, and essays, as well as plays for the stage and radio. He currently resides in Kotka, Finland, living between the ocean and a river. Naples and Marseille are his favorite cities because nothing works in them but everything works out, giving their citizens reasons to believe in miracles. His hobbies include karate, wines, and history. He is also passionate about punk music and fifteenth-century paintings, both of which indulge frenzied creation.

This story unfolds chapter by chapter told by its two opposing lead characters, Jere and Metro. The crux of the drama hangs on their opposing views about graffiti; art or vandalism? Both characters have flaws which are slowly revealed and the plot leads to a crescendo. I found it a compelling story and I cared about both Metro and Jere, wishing and holding out for a good outcome.

It was kind of a different book from what I usually read and also different because it takes place in Finland. I bought it was a Kindle Daily deal and thought I'd give a new author and country a go, and have enjoyed it. The plot held my interest so that I read the book right through in one sitting, as it is an easy, fast read, although be patient as it does start off slowly but gains pace quickly. It is a story about Graffiti activists and the security firm hired to track them down and stop them, which is what makes this entirely original. When the lover of our leading lady, Metro loses his life during a stakeout, the distraught woman's mind turns to thoughts of revenge. The prime object of her rage is Jere, a security operative. Metro is a great character, smart, industrious and their are many twists and turns in this book. The ending was a great surprise to me. Fun, fast, original. 3.5 Stars.

Unlike anything I have read; Finnish noir based around the youthful exploits of graffiti artists and the security employed to stop such anti-social activity.
It is how two lives are changed across this divide, told in the first person, alternating from one to the other, often speaking about similiar action but from their own point of view.
It is a thrilling account of loss, revenge, betrayal and lost dreams. How we can label and see things from only one standpoint; how ones actions can ultimately damage your whole life.
There are some interesting points about societies and how creativity is perhaps viewed; we see how normal aspirations can be sidetracked and easily one can become an instrument of destruction. Is each person responsible for themselves or quilty by association?
I enjoyed the story enormously; the different development of character through opposing eyes and the deeper message the narrative kept bringing to the reader's mind.
The story progresses at pace but never predictively you care for the characters and fear for the outcome both become bent on seeking.
In a novel where absent Fathers seem to influence their children long after they are no longer around it seems ironic that Jere holding down a good job brings so much trouble to his own door. We are introduced to him playing a fantasy game of his son's invention with lego pieces but soon the reader comes to see that real life is more brutal still.
A rare delight in that this is a book to take you out of your own comfort zone and make you think while being fully engrossed and entertained.

Graffiti artists/activists and the security firm hired to track them down and stop them...it may not sound like the ingredients for a page-turner, but think again. Jari Järvelä has tricks up his sleeve to spare. When the lover of virtuoso tagger Metro loses his life during a stakeout, the distraught woman's mind turns to thoughts of revenge. The prime object of her rage is Jere, a security operative. The two play a cat-and-mouse game with one another, with increasingly gorier results. Järvelä's gift is to make both of these characters flawed but sympathetic, even as their plots and counterplots ratchet out of control. I eagerly await the sequel.
