EU top official expected in Argentina to bolster Mercosur/EU trade negotiations

 Ms Mogherini is expected next Wednesday in Buenos Aires; following a meeting with her peer Susana Malcorra, the EU official will be received by president Macri

Argentine president Mauricio Macri is scheduled to receive in a week's time the European Union head of foreign affairs, Federica Mogherini who is expected to announce that all is ready to begin, next April, formal negotiations for the long-delayed trade and cooperation agreement between Mercosur and the EU.

Uruguay prepared to lead Mercosur/EU trade negotiations during the whole year

President Vazquez (R) and foreign minister Nin Novoa are expected to lead the Mercosur negotiating team to Brussels next April

Uruguay, now with the support from Argentina, is very much interested in advancing with the cooperation and trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union, and is planning for president Tabare Vazquez to attend a Brussels meeting with EU officials to emphasize the matter.

Luis Alberto Lacalle, the Ex-President of Uruguay, is currently in the Falkland Islands on a week-long tour, along with Uruguayan Elected Representative Mario Jaime Trobo. Lacalle served as President from 1990 to 1995 and Trobo is presently a Member of the International Affairs Committee.

Argentina and Uruguay foreign ministers agreed to hold twice a year meetings to address all issues in the bilateral agenda but with emphasis on integration and Mercosur which are 'our main concerns'. Susana Malcorra met with her peer Rodolfo Nin Novoa in Montevideo on Friday and after a several hours meeting made brief statements with no questions taken from journalists.

Falklands' exploratory campaign ended, following termination of ocean rig contract

The rig 'Eirik Rude' experienced a number of material operational issues, according to Premier Oil and Noble Energy

The Falkland Islands government and Premier Oil have announced on Friday the ocean rig 'Eirik Raude' contract termination, which in practical terms puts an end to the current exploratory campaign and the scheduled drilling of the Chatham well. Nevertheless both sides underlined the success of the now terminated campaign with the oil discoveries at the Zebedee and Isobel Deep prospects in the North Falkland basin and look forward to continue working in the near future.

Majority of Mercosur teen-agers are 'low performers' in maths, science and reading

Two out of three Argentine teenagers are classified as “low performers” in maths, according to OECD which ranks Argentina 57th out of 64 countries in the subject.

Bad news for Mercosur aspirations. Low standards at schools in most of South America are a common problem according to the latest report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, OECD, which has the region's students among the last fifteen in a list of 64 countries.

Argentina still has uphill battle with holdouts: a stay of pari-passu is next round

Recently elected President Macri has taken a more conciliatory approach to the litigant funds, because of the need to regain access to vital hard currency funding.

While investors cheered progress on last week's arduous negotiations in New York between Argentine government officials and litigant investors, the administration of president Mauricio Macri still faces an uphill battle as it works to bring other holdouts on board.
