Argentina and Uruguay unable to arrest a Chinese flagged poaching jigger

The Argentine Coast Guard and Uruguayan navy failed in capturing a Chinese flagged jigger poaching in the two countries shared waters. According to non official reports, two Argentine Coast Guard vessels and a helicopter plus a Uruguayan aircraft and vessel were involved in the attempt to arrest Hua Li 8.

Greenpeace celebrates and supports cancellation of Icelandic fin whale hunt

Falklands with “no big concentrations of Illex” this season, which is “worrying”

Scientist Arkhipkin said they would need to wait until February 24/25 to see whether the Illex would appear but, and “if it is not there it is a strange situation”.

Early indications from scientific surveys are showing “no big concentrations of Illex,” in the Falkland Islands waters or on the high seas, “which is worrying,” said Falkland Islands Government Senior Fisheries Scientist Sasha Arkhipkin as reported by the Penguin News.

Illex 2016 Fishing Season begins in Falkland’s Waters.

Barton said that the 2015 season was a record for Illex squid with a total of 358,000 tons caught.

Fishing for Illex squid in Falkland’s water took off on Sunday, as the 2016 fishing season opens. A total of 105 fishing licenses have been issued. The number of licenses issued has remained consistent for the past three seasons.

US promotes major traceability plan for fishery products to combat IUU

Toxic algae bloom in south Chile threatening salmon farms

Argentina fish landings down 4,2% last year, but squid was down 25%

Between January and November 2015, Argentine fish exports fell by 7% in volume and 6.8% in value, with 436,897 tons sent abroad equivalent to US$ 1.39bn.

Fish landings in Argentina totaled 752,359.1 tons in 2015, which represents 4.2% less than the previous year, according to the latest from the National Under secretariat of Fisheries. Among the main species of commercial importance, Illex squid (Illex argentinus) led the decline with a drop of 25%, with landings amounting 126,531.4 tons until 30 December 2015.

Spanish scientists analyze European and veined squid diets

Although their bathymetric distribution overlaps, European squid prefers shallow waters, while veined squid generally moves in deeper water over the slope.

A group of Spanish scientists has analyzed for the first time the European and veined squid diet in the Mediterranean. European squid (Loligo vulgaris) and veined squid (Loligo forbesii) are two morphologically nearly identical species that inhabit the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean.
