To give some context before I delve into the Amazon Fire TV, I have been using streaming devices ever since the original Xbox on which I installed XBMC. I have a large collection of media on a PC which I use to stream to our main TV. Since the original Xbox I have used a variety of devices to stream media including Apple TV, more recent consoles and the Google Chromecast.

*** SET UP ***

The Amazon Fire TV includes the unit itself, along with a power adaptor, 2 x AAA batteries and a remote control. Before you can use this though, you will also need to purchase a HDMI cable (Amazon has these for around 5). You may also need to buy an optical cable, depending on your setup (more on that later). Setup was a cinch, plug the unit into your power supply, connect your Ethernet cable (if you want a wired connection) and connect the HDMI cable to your television.

It was nice to see that each Fire TV comes pre-configured for your Amazon account, so there's no need to login. Simply plug it in, update the software and off you go.

When the Fire TV finishes downloading and installing a software update on first boot, you will eventually arrive at the Home screen. Here you will find all of your Amazon Prime content (although at the moment there is no easy way to sort between what you get free with your Prime subscription and the paid content).

You can also install third-party apps. The only one I have installed at the time of review was Plex. Do note, that this is a paid application. It will cost you either 2.98 or 298 Amazon Coins. I went for the latter option as Amazon offer 89 coins with the Plex 'purchase', which means the effective cost is 209 coins (or 2.09).

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazon Fire TV benefits - a detailed overview 19 Feb. 2015
By A Javaid TOP 500 REVIEWER
Here is an overview of the scope of services as well as my personal assessment of Amazons new streaming box "Fire TV", which has been available since Sept/Oct 2014 now in the UK.

My situation: I'm an Amazon Prime customer - but no prime-enabled Smart TV. I ordered the Fire TV on the basis that I was curious whether the streaming ability in conjunction with my already slightly elderly living room LCD TV from Sony (built in 2009) was possible and whether the total package really in practice carried the promised "added value."

Delivery: In addition to the actual Fire TV in the appropriate amazon packaging, it contained an accompanying remote control including required batteries containing (2x AAA), a power cord (power cable to power supply) for the power supply and a printed Quick Start Guide.

Aesthetics/Design: The easiest way to probably describe the overall appearance would be to use the simple term "simple". An inconspicuous square black box that doesn't beg for a lot of space to be present upon which to be seated. The Amazon logo on the top is not to be overlooked, but does not interfere. What I perhaps did not like so much were the sharp edges and corners of the box (even though some effort has been made somehow to ensure they're "rounded" down).

What is not present, but is required: You definitely need a sufficiently long HDMI cable to connect the box to your TV (HDTV) to connect. Off the Amazon website, the basic "Amazon basics HDMI cable" should serve this purpose and should ideally be ordered at the same time if required. Of course, there must be a free HDMI slot on the TV to be used solely by the Fire TV box.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quick interface but too many weaknesses 15 Mar. 2015
By JJ Bud
Verified Purchase
Started out great, the speed of the interface was great and it offered a convenient way of watching Amazon and Netflix content.
After using the device for a few months, the application content is limited and lack of USB hard drive connectivity is a major drawback.
There have been numerous issues with Netflix buffering even though it plays flawless on every other device in the house. The device itself also suffers from a number of network issues. Quite often it loses connectivity and the only way for it to pick it up again is to restart. Device is a nice idea but implementation leaves a lot to be desired.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bad reviews of this product Irk me a great deal 4 Dec. 2014
After using various streamers over the years, including so called next gen droid boxes and of course a mini pc. All I can say is im SOLD on this.
I run Sky HD and as i'm sure you are aware it is and never will be true HD. This so called service costs me 80 pounds per month for all packages, for a sub par viewing system.
Now moving onto the Fire TV, you will upon boot up, exclaim "whoah check out that picture", well at least my wife did! It is so clean and crisp.
I have seen lots of negative reviews about Prime, now for 6 pounds a month you can look at > 15k film and tv shows, that 10 percent the cost of sky. Why moan?
Now add a net flix account and for less than a weekly take out, you have access to more media that you can look at in a life time!
Missed a terrestrial TV show? use the APPS that Amazon provide.
Cant see your local Data? Buy Plex at 1.99 and play way.
Want to see the latest shows? Side load a certain program and hey presto every single channel under the known TV land is yours
Unable to record? use the side loaded program, buy a 50 pound NAS server and record/share to your hearts content.
69 pound for this seems way to cheap when you look at the cost of the plastic streaming boxes out there.

Bad reviews of this product Irk me a great deal. Ok it maybe easier to get a sub par android box and save a few hours of tinkering, BUT, as I said I have used the cyclone,m8,apple tv and google stick, most have been ebayed. This won't be.

EDIT forgot to add, The kids love this for gaming, I use a USB extender port and 2 wired xbox controller, They use this over the old xbox 360
