A few years ago my husband surprised me with a Kindle as he was sick of me keeping him awake at night reading with a lamp on. The funny thing was, he bought the wrong Kindle and it didn't have a back light!! Anyway, I enjoyed many years of reading on my Kindle although of late, the battery life is not what it was so this Christmas, my husband surprised me again with the Kindle Fire HD7, 8GB.

After playing about with it since Christmas Day, I am really pleased with it. To me, it is very similar to my mobile phone (Samsung Galaxy Siii Mini) in that I can read on it, read and reply to emails, use Facebook, shop on it etc. However, what I like about the Kindle Fire is of course the screen size so now when I read email and go on Facebook etc, everything is enlarged and it's much easier. I am still getting used to the keypad and can't type as fast on this as I can via my phone but I remember struggling with my phone keypad when I first got it and now it's a doddle.

Once I logged into Facebook, it asked if I wanted to copy all my Facebook photos over to Cloud which I did and that's good as well, to have all my photos. I have used the camera a few times but not quite used to that yet and not convinced it takes as good a photo as my phone does.

I have used it to shop on Amazon. I have downloaded a few apps and have even downloaded a game app my kids are fond of and had a play on it myself! So far, the battery life is impressive although I do power it off when not in use same as I always did with my original Kindle. This one comes with a charger (I believe the older versions didn't).

I bought this new Fire HD 4th Generation to replace my old original 1st Generation Fire which has given great service under heavy use but the pop up keyboard was starting to act up so I decided to renew.
The new Fire is a fantastic device - but so was the old one. There are some changes to the software and screen presentation but you soon get used to them. A first time Fire buyer will master the device very quickly - and there is an online manual to help on the more complex operations plus 24/7 online support.
It is hard to fault the Fire HD. It is fast, the screen is superb, it operates very logically, even an old git like me feels at home with it quickly. The sound is OK for videos and audio books but can be improved dramatically by the purchase of tiny plug in speakers if you listen to much music on it as I do in bed. The speakers are about £10 each - well worth it.
The screen size sounds small but is ideal for watching videos on your own or reading Kindle books. My wife uses an Apple iPad which has a larger screen but is big and bulky compared to my Fire. The iPad, as far as I can see, does nothing better than the Fire (except offer more apps) but costs more than 3 times the £119 of the Fire HD. And the missus seems to have many problems with Apple updates - where my Fire just updates itself and keeps working perfectly. Baffles me why folk pay £400 for an iPad except for the 'status'.
Obviously any machine is only suitable if it does what you want. I check & reply to emails, shop online, download and read Kindle books, download & listen to audio books (great relaxation), download music and web search. In every respect the performance equals my Windows PC. If you want to create documents and the like the Fire is not for you. Read more ›

I purchased this to replace my old, broken Kindle Fire, and was interested in how it would compare with my previous model. As with all kindles, it is exceptionally easy to setup, which is one of the reasons why I always prefer Amazon gadgets to any others. My technical knowledge is not great, but I had this up and running within minutes - you merely link up to your wifi and register it to your account and everything is there for you to use. Although I haven't had a Kindle Fire for a few months, everything I had brought previously for my old model was available in my Cloud and ready to be used on this version.

This has a camera, front and back, which my old version never had. I have already used it at a school assembly to take some pictures and it was easy to use and a really good addition. The other thing I like about it is that I can set up profiles for my children - which is something new and a very useful idea. This means that all my children's apps, books, etc can live in one place and not clutter up my screen and you can also set up parental controls to stop them from viewing anything unsuitable. There is even the choice of setting daily goals and time limits, which you might find useful. Of course, the Kindle Fire is linked in largely to Amazon products and, so, it depends on how much you use them or mind being tied in with one particular company. Personally, as I buy virtually all my books via Kindle (the other site I use a lot is NetGalley and they can also download directly to your kindle), listen to Audible books and find that the apps available for my children are more than enough, it works very well for me. Reading on the Fire is probably not as good as a Kindle ereader; although for colour picture books for children or magazines, it works very well indeed. Overall, it is a handy little tablet which does everything I need. You are slightly limited in being tied in to Amazon products, but only you can decide whether or not that works for you.
