I'm a huge fitbit fan. I started with the Fitbit Ultra two and a half years ago. I had trouble with charging it after nine months or so and Fitbit sent me the Fitbit One as a free replacement and I was delighted with it. I then moved on to the Fitbit Flex, which was wristband based, so I could keep it on for daily wear and for sleep monitoring, but the downside was losing the display of the time and the number of steps and the number of flights of stairs climbed, which was replaced with a minimal five dot display each representing 20% of your target. I could use the phone app for more detail but it is good to have the display on your wrist. I am delighted to have the chance to review the Fitbit Charge now and pleased to have the displays which were missing from the Flex reinstated on the Charge. I've also been lucky enough to review other wrist band trackers for amazon, so this review will compare aspects of the Fitbit Charge to them, as well as to the Fitbit Flex.

Set up and syncing - I have an iphone5 and had the app already dowloaded but did download the latest software to my Mac. I indicated that I already had an account and was replacing my device and it found my new Charge very quickly. Instructions are website rather than paper based but set up is straightforward and takes minutes. The iphone app is excellent and can 'force' a sync. A dongle in my laptop means I get an autosync when I'm in the vicinity - 20 metres or so.

Motivation - When all is said and done these are fancy pedometers with a website attached and very good apps for your smartphone. However, I find them extremely motivating.

I am a big fan of Fitbit having used a Fitbit Flex for a while. The Charge is a natural 'step up' from the Flex.

The Pros:
Nice clean wrist strap with a pleasant texture
The ability to see progress on the display and also being able to use this as a watch is a big plus for me
Automatic sleep detection - a good upgrade to the Flex and you can 'tweak' the times if it's slightly wrong (I tend to read before sleeping and it thinks I'm asleep earlier than I actually am)
No need to install a new App as it works with the existing iOS App and just asks if you want to change
It knows when you go up and down stairs ;)
It can be switched into 'exercise' mode and will track you more accurately for the duration of a run

The Cons
The wrist strap is wider than the Flex and I ordered the same size (Small) which is a little more snug than the Flex was for me. It also only comes with one strap whereas the Flex comes with a large and a small so you can pay around with which one you like best when you have small wrists like I do
It is not obvious that there is an online manual which is immensely helpful, but quite difficult to find (here for anyone interested: http://help.fitbit.com/resource/manual_charge_en_US)
The unit is not removable like the Flex which comes out of the strap. Instead this one is screwed in and so you need to charge it with the strap attached. I personally have avoided wearing it in the shower as the contacts for charging are exposed and I don't think it will do them any good to get wet too often.
Battery life - as others have said this is abismal, but my view is that as this is such a new product there are some 'duff' ones out there.

I've been using the Fitbit One fitness tracker for about two years. It's easy to use, since it clips on your belt and you can forget about it. But I like the idea of the fitness tracker, and have tried several others, such as the Nike+ Fuelband, and the the Fitbit Flex and Jawbone Up 24. I found that all of these trackers - with the exception of the Fitbit One, were inaccurate, and many were uncomfortable.

Fitbit has released a new fitness tracker, the £99 Fitbit Charge. This device is similar to the Fitbit Flex, but with a larger OLED display that can show the time, steps taken, distance travelled and more. Unlike the Flex, however, the Charge is very accurate. When I tried the Flex for a few days, I found its numbers diverged widely from those of the Fitbit One, especially when walking on a treadmill, or when driving in a car; it counted about 100 steps during a 15-minute drive, for example. A waist-worn tracker is probably the most reliable in counting steps, and the One is a good benchmark. Fitbit seems to have greatly improved the accuracy here, making the Charge seem much more accurate than its predecessor, and than the Jawbone Up 24, which was also very inaccurate.

The Fitbit Charge records your steps, floors you climb (using an altimeter; 10 ft = 1 floor), your "active minutes," and your sleep. Using steps, it gives you a rough idea of the distance you've travelled. It also calculates the number of calories you have burned, based on your activity; you can log food as well, to determine how much you've eaten, and set a goal of burning more calories than you consume each day. You can record your weight, either by entering it manually, or by syncing with Fitbit's Aria scale. (I use one of these, and it's easy to use, and syncs to your Fitbit account over Wi-Fi.
