5.0 out of 5 stars A man on fire won't burn. He'll explode. 23 Feb 2005
Format:Paperback
I first heard of this book when AJ Quinnell had an interview with the Guardian newspaper, and from the sypnopsis of the book, I thought it sounded pretty good. I have previously been a fan of thriller novels, such as the Tom Clancy books, but this book amazed me.
The first few chapters are pretty slow-going, but when it gets going, it's very exiting.
When a former Soldier of Fortune; Creasy, gets a job protecting the daughter of a wealthy Italian family, he forms a shield of resistance towards everyone. However, as time goes on Pinta (the young girl) weasals her way into his heart. So when a group of kidnappers snatch her from Creasy outside her school, he goes on a rampage to kill everyone and everything that was in any way involved.
The writing is so effective, that you care about the characters, you want Creasy to be triumphant, you will feel his pain, and you WILL cry at the end.
You also feel that the Author, AJ Quinnell, knows what he is talking about when he describes weapons, the Italian crime Labyrinth, and Creasy's military history. This makes the novel even more compelling

This is a great book with a heart, a brain, and a nasty streak a mile wide.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book is always better than the film... 19 Nov 2004
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I went to the cinema to watch the film Man on Fire starring Denzel Washington with high expectations after seeing the trailer. I was not disappointed, a great film indeed, however, I am one of these people who likes to read the book to gauge the differences for myself. On this occasion I bought the book after I saw the film and read it while the film was still fresh in the memory. The main difference are that it was originally set in Italy rather than Mexico like the film. It gives more background on John Creasy our bodyguard hero, so you can understand fully why he wrestles with his demons and alcohol. Books are always better for this reason, you can fully explore the ins and outs and develop an affinity with the characters. I was very pleased with the book and would recommend this to my friends and family and I urge you to purchase this well written gem to add to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have read. 4 Feb 2002
Format:Paperback
This is one of my favored books. No wonder that A.J.Quinnell wrote 3 more sequels to the story of Creasy who has captured the attention of Italian movie producers. They even had an excellent choice in casting Glenn Scott as Creasy. Unfortunately the movie was a flop, but then most of the great books suffer the same fate. In case you find this book an enjoyable reading, I highly recommend also "The Bourne Identity" by R.Ludlum also followed by sequels and if you are lucky in search of other gret books I recommend "Azrael" by William DeAndrea, also followed by sequels: "Snark" and "Cronus". They can be found on Amazon.com.(sounds like addvertising, but it is a good starting point to find many great books).

5.0 out of 5 stars Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war! 17 Feb 2003
Format:Paperback
X merc Creasy thought he was taking on an easy retirement job babysitting the daughter of a wealthy Italian family, but when his charge is kidnapped by the mafia he has to call on all his skills to set things right.
He is 'the man with no name' in a modern setting. One of the best heroes I have ever come across.
A MUST READ for all those who like action.

5.0 out of 5 stars A cracking story of vengeance!! 30 April 2013
By Steve.J TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book was written 30 years ago, but don't let that put you off, it is still a pacey (well apart from the introduction) action story of vengeance against organised crime in Italy. The main character, Creasy, is an ex-mercenary finding civilian life difficult to adjust to, so takes an 'easy' job as a bodyguard. His charge is kidnapped and Creasy sets off to exact revenge for the crime, utilising a lifetimes experience of the military to take on a large organization. This storyline has been used a number of times, but I feel that this book makes some of the best use of the idea that I have ever read or watched.
Some of the references, weapons and situations do have a rather old feel to them now, but the story is one that grips you and never lets go. I am on my second copy of the book, as it one worth reading again (if you are the type of person who likes to read a book more than once - I know some don't).

The book was made into a film starring Denzel Washington and directed by Tony Scott, in 2004. This is well worth a watch, but as you would expect there are some serious plot changes and the film just cannot provide the depth that the book does. There was also an earlier film starring Scott Glenn made in the mid 1980's, but I have not seen it, so cannot comment on it (I just don't have the patience to wade through loads of short clips on youtube!!)

Read the book and enjoy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book I've Ever Read. 14 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This has got to be one of, if not THE best book i've ever read. It is extremely well written and you get the idea that the author knows exactly what he's talking about with the way he describes weopans and how they are used. You really do get to like the little girl that is in the story and when whatever happens to her happens (i don't want to spoil it) it really sickens and saddens you. When you realise that her death (more to it than that) has given Creasy a desire to be almost reborn in hatred and revenge, you cheer him on. The ending is absolutely brilliant and the little twist at the end warmed my heart. The story doesn't end there either, there are more in the series, each one better than the last. I only read horror, but these have become my favourite series of books, highly recommended.
