Very hesitant to get a kindle as I do love reading books. However, very impressed as I do have a problem reading from computer screens normally, but absolutely no trouble with the Kindle. My Husband is also very impressed with it as he has similar eye problems. No trouble with downloads and no problems with reading the user manual. Well done!!!!

This is my second ever model of kindle, having had one of the first kindles that was ever released. Having had two replacements for this when the screen started freezing, I thought I would have a go with a new model. Though the concept remains the same, things have moved on a bit since the first kindles!
The most obvious difference is the touch screen! As I am used to working touchscreen phones and tablets, this is a welcome addition for me. I really really like it. It makes navigation much easier and more intuative.
In use, the screen is perfect for reading from. It looks like a real book page. There isn't the unpleasant glare and brightness that I get when using the kindle app on my iPad. It is easy to read from and I would imagine that this reduces eyes train and headaches.
It seems that this new kindle turns the page quicker and more seamlessly than the older model. Everything about it just feels smoother and less clunky.
I've always been impressed with kindle battery life and although I haven't yet had the opportunity to wear the battery down, it should in theory last for weeks. I do an awful lot of reading and for me this is an important point.
Unlike some of the more expensive kindles, this model does not have a back light. But the kindles that do cost twice the amount of money, and my partner put his foot down!.... To be honest though I like reading in the evenings next to a lamp. Perhaps the light on the kindle itself is more for people who read in bed / at night without any lights on.
The kindle is able to tell you, based upon your average reading speed so far, how much longer you have to go until you complete the book that you are reading. Read more ›

I read the various reviews available for readers and the differing options, tablets & lights etc and I only wanted a kindle that I could read books on, wasnt bothered about lights and internet browsing (that would be a tablet then !) and didnt need it to feel like it had been hand made in silicon valley
this does exactly what I wanted it to do, its light and easy to use so if you are looking for a book reader that dosnt make tea or walk the dog but allows you to read books, this is the one for you - thoroughly recommnded

Love love love my kindle. In hindsight I should have bought the paper white with the light but that's my own fault. Downloads books really quickly. Great for travel as it's so lightweight. Sometimes the page turning seems to go awry however it might be my big paw hands. I will always buy my big coffee table books and honestly prefer a real book however for travel and storage you can't beat a kindle. Highly recommend.

This is my first e-reader Kindle, having owned a Kindle Fire HD since release which I've used plenty for reading, but wanted a glare-free screen to use outside- mainly whilst fishing whilst the fish aren't biting! I was umming and arring between this and a Paperwhite, which I've played around with and was suitably impressed, but was it worth nearly twice as much? Having now owned since release day and reading two books on it; impressions:-
Build quality- Functional. I agree with some reviews that it looks/feel 'cheap' compared to older models/the Fire HD, but as it has no moving parts, or has no bearing in the functioning on the unit, other than the feel in your hand. I don't see how this can be used against it, thus it has no impact on my review score. Perhaps cheaper plastic was used than previous versions to offset the improved technology? You can't have it all I guess but I know which I'm more concerned about with a device of this nature. For others that like their gadgets more aesthetically pleasing, then this could have some bearing.
Screen- brill! Far more friendly contrast than the Fire HD I've been using since release. Responsive to different light levels, from a small bedside lamp, to glaring sunshine. I should point out here that a small bedside lamp is all that is required for sufficient light levels for comfortable reading, which is one of the reasons I was going to opt for the Paperwhite originally, but it has not been a problem at all. I do have 20/20 vision though (touch wood), so can't comment on how it would be for those whose vision is poorer.
Comfort- held for hours, no probs. Having come from using the Fire HD and real books, this is like holding thin air! Have seem some reviews knock points of for being 'to thick/chunky'!? Read more ›

Fantastic combination of tech. It doesn't have a backlight but you shouldn't read on a backlit screen anyway, and it doesn't have 3G but for the price it's excellent, bought to replace my old keyboard kindle that was broken a while back, for use on trains and planes mostly. If you're going on a longhaul flight and are going to be travelling for a while, you might as well invest in this as you could easily spend this much buying a couple of books to take with you. And this takes a fraction of the space in your bags. And this is coming from a book-hoarder lol
only downside is mine's already got a slight scratch on the screen while I've been waiting for a case to arrive for it so make sure to buy a case with yours
