To give some context before I delve into the Amazon Fire TV, I have been using streaming devices ever since the original Xbox on which I installed XBMC. I have a large collection of media on a PC which I use to stream to our main TV. Since the original Xbox I have used a variety of devices to stream media including Apple TV, more recent consoles and the Google Chromecast.

*** SET UP ***

The Amazon Fire TV includes the unit itself, along with a power adaptor, 2 x AAA batteries and a remote control. Before you can use this though, you will also need to purchase a HDMI cable (Amazon has these for around 5). You may also need to buy an optical cable, depending on your setup (more on that later). Setup was a cinch, plug the unit into your power supply, connect your Ethernet cable (if you want a wired connection) and connect the HDMI cable to your television.

It was nice to see that each Fire TV comes pre-configured for your Amazon account, so there's no need to login. Simply plug it in, update the software and off you go.

When the Fire TV finishes downloading and installing a software update on first boot, you will eventually arrive at the Home screen. Here you will find all of your Amazon Prime content (although at the moment there is no easy way to sort between what you get free with your Prime subscription and the paid content).

You can also install third-party apps. The only one I have installed at the time of review was Plex. Do note, that this is a paid application. It will cost you either 2.98 or 298 Amazon Coins. I went for the latter option as Amazon offer 89 coins with the Plex 'purchase', which means the effective cost is 209 coins (or 2.09).

3.0 out of 5 stars OK but could do better 25 Oct 2014

OK, so this is Amazon's version of Now TV/Google Chrome Cast TV/Roku/etc etc. Costing twice as much as some of its rivals, you would expect a stellar performance and in some respects you get one. We benefit here from cable broadband at 50mb/sec and so steaming of everything is a doddle. Connection through HDMI to an HD TV produces excellent picture quality and I'm guessing the sound would be more than passable too, although as the streamer is not connected to a quality AV sound system here at home, I can only judge by what is coming out of the TV speakers at this time. Bythe way, as there is no volume control on the supplied remote, so items play with a very high volume that can only be controlled by the TV remote - in some instances, virtually close to off to get the most comfortable listening level.

Why only 3*s? Well given the hype of the launch promotion and Amazon saying just what this new box can do, I was more than a little disappointed about what it cannot do. For example, as yet no You Tube (you can get there indirectly via You Player, which can be found by searching - it's not on the existing apps list)or two of the other UK terrestrial TV players - 4OD & ITV Player (if you are Scottish, there is an STV Player - again you have to search for it). This product has launched into the UK and yet does not cover UK expectations. Big mistake.

Also, what exactly does the USB port do? I attached a portable hard drive through it but nothing, nix, nada. The only music/videos/photos that I have been able to play/show so far are the ones stored in Amazon's Cloud, which although reasonably generous for free at 5GB, is less than adequate for what I have stored on external Hard drives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive, a must for Prime members 25 Oct 2014
By Cheshire Cat TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE

The latest contender in the set top box market is the Amazon Fire TV. It arrives in attractive and cleverly thought out packaging that is reminiscent of Apple in terms of clever layout but at the same time original in concept.

If you have an Amazon account, the Fire TV has already been configured with your details but if not, setting those up is a very easy and quick task.

The box contains:-

* Fire TV (a rather nondescript square on plan good quality black plastic box)
* Remote ( black good quality plastic with good 'feel')
* Mains adaptor (15w)
* 2 Amazon AAA batteries
* Brief but clear instructions and the obligatory safety/compliance statement.

No HDMi cable however which is essential to connect to the HDMI socket on your TV or AV system. A small point because many people have by now acquired spare cables with other equipment but they are easy to obtain.

Central to the successful use of Fire TV is a good internet connection. Experience of Apple TV showed a need for a minimum of 2mb but downloads would be slow. We now have BT Infinity fibre which allowed on Fire ( and Apple and all other on demand services) almost instant playback.

Connecting to the Internet was very quick and easy via Wi-fi but an Ethernet port is also available if a hard wired connection is preferred. A short delay of 5 minutes whilst a software download was applied and the Fire TV was ready to use, indicated by the auto running of a clear and helpful introduction video.

The user interface is not the most intuitive I've seen but still relatively easy to understand and, if you go too far astray, a press of the remote's home button takes you back to safety! Parental controls are available using a PIN.
