This is a budget priced lawnmower from Bosch, a good name in power tools. The main mower unit is pre-assembled - all you need to do is attach the two rear wheels. At first I thought they were missing from the box but were actually concealed inside the grass box. You need two people to assemble it comfortably, though you could do it on your own, it would be a little awkward. I managed to assemble it without any tools, though a philips screwdriver may be helpful for some people. Assembling the black handle frame was fairly easy. There's not that many parts and the instructions, although lacking in words, have diagrams which do explain things fairly well if you examine them carefully. The grass box was a little fiddly to put together - it's in two parts with red clips. The idea behind this lawnmower is that it is easy to store in a compact space and quickly assemble and I was pretty impressed with its fold down attributes. It powers on easily using the safety pull and switch and the motor is powerful and impressive. It cuts the grass pretty well I think, but it should be said that this mower really is intended, in my view, for the person who hasn't much space to store a lawnmower who only has a fairly small lawn. Because it is light and easy to maneuver, it should suit a wide range of potential users. You might need an extension lead to reach the end of your garden. All in all, I am impressed with this lawnmower. It works well and looks really good. The small capacity grassbox would be ideal for those who would struggle with bigger, heavier ones. My only caution is that it doesn't strike me as terribly sturdy, but with care in use and storage, there is no reason why this lawnmower should not provide many years of service. Recommended.

I've been a fan of the Flymo for many years so this Bosch mower is a bit of a departure.

I thought I'd throw the machine in at the deep end, first cut of the season on long boggy grass. If it can handle this, I thought, it would earn a distinction. I even cut the lawn first thing this morning, the grass was wet, it was wellie weather and I was going to show no mercy.

I was slightly delayed as I had to put it together. It was relatively straight forward, clip the wheels on, clip the two halves of the grass box together (incidentally it feels a little flimsy) and put the handles on (not that easy). It took all of 15 minutes, the instructions were Ok but not as clear as they could be. Give the wheels a good hard tap to clip them in place. Don't over tighten the lever bolts on the base of the handle or you will not be able to push the levers down and could damage the fixings.

Adjustment to the height of the cutting blade can be made by easily adjusting the front wheels for height using one lever. This is actually better than having to use spacers on a Flymo which necessitates taking the blade off.
It was time to cut the grass.

The mower felt light and easy to manoeuvre, I used a cutting height of 40mm for the first cut. I don't have to biggest garden in the world but I still need to use an extension lead to get to the corners. What I did notice was the built in lead, which does not detach is around 2-3 metres shorter than the Flymo lead so it meant having to use a bit more extension lead.

As to the cutting ability, it went through the grass like a hot knife through butter. There were a couple of areas of really thick long grass where it had to work a little harder but it did the job and did it well.

The grass box is very difficult to fit to the rear of the mower as the plastic opening has side pieces which flap outwards and you need to push them back while trying to hook on the box. I have at present returned the box to Bosch for their opinion.
Buy the previous version ( which is still available ) with the black grass box. I have this modle as well and the box is an excellent fit with no problems at all *****

I went from a hover mower to this, the difference is massive. Its not the widest but as its on wheels and has a decent motor it cuts thorugh grass without issue and is a million times easier to work that the hover. Also changing the cutting height is a doddle with the lever that you pull forwards or backwards and lock. The combs to get the edge grass are also very effective. My grass is too poor to notice any striping though.

Putting it together was easy and stowing it away is also easy and it gets very compact. The grass box is the only tricky bit and requires some lining up skills but once its clicked together its great.

My only issue with it is that the grass box has no method of telling you its full, the only time you find out is when the machine loses power and backs up. I can live with this but some kind of perspex window or other method would have helped.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Innovatively packed, I was doubtful that there was a full size machine in the BOSCH sealed box, which measured about 61 cm x 41 cm x 37 cm, but it opened to reveal the contents as listed on the box side:

* '1 x Bosch Rotak 34 R Lawnmower
* 1 x Grass Box
* 1 x Instruction Manual/Troubleshooter Guide. (for ROTAK MODELS 34 R/37 R // 340 R/370 R)
Note: The wheels are hidden in the grass box.'

Out of the box, the 'corded' (Mains Powered) BOSCH Rotak 34 R (incidentally, the '34' relates to the cutting width of 34 cm for those not in the know) was relatively easy to assemble, but it is necessary to look at the bigger picture for further optical guidance - i.e. the box - rather than just rely on the instruction leaflet, if my experience is anything to go by!
A little bit of pressure is required to click the wheels into place and the 2-height handle needed some pondering, but in reasonably quick time this compact and relatively lightweight mower (11.3 kg) was ready for action.
The 40-litre grass-box seemed on the flimsy side - even when assembled - but it is efficient, with no problems in picking up every cut blade of grass with the two weeks growth it was first set to task on and less emptying trips (compared to my ageing flymo).

There are 5 cutting heights:

* 20 mm
* 30 mm
* 45 mm
* 55 mm
* 70 mm

which are easily set, and around 10 m of cable which is OK, but then an extension flex has always been necessary for the lawn area, in my particular case. The machine is easy to manoeuvre and the wheels make it easy to get right up to the edges.
And....as it also says on the box...
