5.0 out of 5 stars Hugely underrated. The best drama on TV.
I have been a fan of this series since the first episode. The whole series is superbly acted and the cases are thrilling and intriguing from beginning to end.

The stand out performances have to come from Maxine Peake as the brilliant but flawed Martha Costello. I have never liked a character so much but at times found them so infuriating. However she is...

Series 1 of Silk was good. Series 2 was even better. Series 3, however, was a complete mess. Series 1 of Silk was good. Series 2 was even better. Series 3, however, was a complete mess. The main character Martha goes from being a warm, compassionate and genuine character to a shrieking caricature who accuses all police officers of being bent and tells a judge to ignore all the evidence because she just 'knows' her client is innocent. Clive's development is even worse. He goes from being in love with Martha and turning down prosecution work to help her out to shagging another woman in the office that he shares with Martha and turning Shoe Lane into a prosecution-only Chambers, effectively forcing Martha out. Billy's cancer storyline is left unresolved. Frances Barber has nothing to do but swig vodka from a water bottle. The 'bit' players start getting their own storylines for some reason (did anyone want to see Jake taking up boxing or John poking his nose into everything?) The cases now feel like a ludicrous afterthought amongst all the soapy melodrama. It all ends with a bizarre cliffhanger which isn't so much an ending as it is Peter Moffat saying 'screw you BBC and Silk fans'.

Give this a miss and watch the first two series instead. (Series 2 has a nice closure which could easily have been the end.)

2.0 out of 5 stars Get Season 1 and 2 instead, 16 April 2014
This review is from: Silk - Series 3 [DVD] (DVD)
Unfortunately they dropped the ball for season 3, not sure what went wrong but the whole thing was a bit fo a mess. From the story to the overly done glowy postproduction. I am big fan of Martha Costello, but this one doesn't do her justice..

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 8 April 2014

I' d forgotten I'd pre ordered the DVD. I had so enjoyed the 1st two series so had every reason to think the third series would be as good. How wrong I was. I thought the Martha character quite bland really, not what we'd come to expect as though Maxine P was bored with it all. Clive, was much better - didn't try and hog the 'action' as you'd expect but became a character that could really grow. Well done Rupert P. However simply can't recommend, sorry.

However she is probably pipped at the post by the amazing Caroline Warrick, played by Frances Barber who has all of the best lines and delivers them with such venom, she almost spits it through the screen at you.

It's a real shame this 3rd series is supposed to be the last as there is so much more they can do. Hopefully it is not the last we have seeN of this great bunch of characters and actors. Surely a CW spin off is a certainty!
