Product Description

The second of three epic instalments in director Peter Jackson's blockbuster prequel to 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy. Set in Middle-Earth 60 years before events in 'The Lord of the Rings', the story follows the adventures of Hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), who, at the instigation of the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen), suddenly finds himself co-opted into joining a company of 13 Dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) to help reclaim the lost kingdom of the Lonely Mountain from the clutches of Smaug the dragon (voice of Benedict Cumberbatch). In this film, while Gandalf heads south on his own, Bilbo, Thorin and the Dwarves enter the treacherous Mirkwood Forest on their way to the mountain. When they reach Lake-town Bilbo will have to perform the role he was assigned at the start of the quest - to find a secret door that will lead him to the lair of the dragon...

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, on an epic quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

Having survived the beginning of their unexpected journey, the Company continues East, encountering along the way the skin-changer Beorn and a swarm of giant Spiders in the treacherous forest of Mirkwood. After escaping capture by the dangerous Wood-elves, the Dwarves journey to Lake-town, and finally to the Lonely Mountain itself, where they must face the greatest danger of all-a creature more terrifying than any other; one which will test not only the depth of their courage but the limits of their friendship and the wisdom of the journey itself - the Dragon Smaug.

I liked this second part of "Hobbit" film trilogy, even if the changes made to the original story become here as large and sometimes as vicious and destructive as Smaug the Magnificent. Below, more of my impressions, with some SPOILERS, which I tried to keep to strict minimum.

First, the good stuff:

1) Visually this film is breath-taking! Mirkwood, Dol Guldur, Erebor, and of course Smaug - pure perfection. Creatures were also very well made, with the attercops (ettercaps) from Mirkwood and Bolg, son of Azog being the most impressive.

2) The excellent casting. Not one mistake, and that includes Evangeline Lilly, who did a great job even if her controversial character Tauriel shouldn't be here at all... (see below). Special acclamation for Stephen Fry as Master of Lake-town of Esgaroth

3) Acoustics and music. Flawless.

4) Certain (but not all - see below) changes and additions to the story were well done and are very welcome, even if they take really big liberties with Tolkien's lore. Amongst them my favourites are the dark tombs in high mountains of Rhudaur and the long sequence in which Gandalf finally discovers who EXACTLY is the master of the "abandoned" fortress of Dol Guldur. I also rather liked the glimpse into the background of Elvish king Thranduil, as it explains why is he such an a-hole...

5) Some of most humorous action scenes. I liked the deliberately over the top character of some of the stunts during supposedly very dramatic fights - it very pleasantly reminds of the lighter tone of "Hobbit" as compared with the much more serious, darker and violent "Lord of the Rings".

6) Some insight into Orcs minds, especially when one of them, made prisoner by Elves, is interrogated...

3.0 out of 5 stars lotr/twilight/hobbit all in one mixed up story 13 April 2014
Format:DVD
First of this film isnt so bad its luke warm to me it had enough of its original elements to keep me from boredom and a few small and some rather big changes i didnt agree with.

negatives

for 1 Bilbo obsession of the ring so damn early and heavy influences of sauron is unmistakable in this film and overshadows the actual hobbit way to much making the quest actually seeming like a back story yes we know hes coming back to middle earth but we dont need a step by step of what hes doing lol. as for bilbos obsession with ring hes had it for 12 months and its starting to take its hold already ? bit early for that should have left that to when hes journeying back at least if there trying to comment the rings hold.

2. the twlight love trangle between a dewarf legolas and some she elf that was never in the book is by all basicly adding this in for girls i recon as i cant see why this had to be changed or necessary to have another character dont get me wrong its nice but like the above is way to focused on this.

3 the barrel riding im pretty sure bilbo put the lids on the barrels and there was no pack of orcs chasing them down the river.
( seems like a lotr obsession urukai chasing aragon etc from first film now we have orcs lol.

4. legolas was never mentioned by name in the film but get why he was there due to being the kings son however the screen time he has is by far mind boggling.

i know jackson got alot of unfinished notes etc for the film from tolkiens logs but come on weres half the rest of the material

weres bilbos spider song
weres the steam of forgetfulness.
weres bilbos actual exploring the place first finding them im pretty sure thorin was in a diffrent cell block from the others.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Alive! 8 April 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is more like it. Whereas the first instalment had the almost impossible task of establishing 13+ new characters, this episode has settled in magnificently, giving Jackson and his cast the freedom to do what they do best: tell a ripping yarn.
On the down side (although PJ will avow that the 'fillers' have been lifted from the appendices of LOTR and the only really invented character is that of Tauriel), it wanders a little from the 'spirit' of the original book and it is hard to muster tension when you know that the main characters of Gandalf, Bilbo, Legolas et al WILL live to fight another day.
That being said, it's a great action adventure with more than enough there for us to get to know the newcomers - Bard, Beorn and the deliciously evil Smaug, no cardboard cut-out dragon he! - and appreciate their stories.
Looking forward to part three already!

2.0 out of 5 stars The padding is really starting to show... 13 April 2014
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've been an avid fan of Tolkien's books for about 45 years now. I was apprehensive when I first heard that Peter Jackson was making a film trilogy of the Ring books, but on the whole my fears proved groundless and I think he did a very creditable job with them. So much so that I have all the Director's cut DVDs and they stand up well to repeated viewing. Then I heard he was doing the Hobbit...

Well many others have already made the point here and elsewhere that they had grave doubts about him spinning it out over three films, and I had the same doubts. Unlike LoTR however this time my fears have proved well grounded. I didn't really enjoy the first part. I found it unimaginatively scripted and directed with the dwarves being reduced to little more than a Disneyfied comic turn rather than being the weary, weather stained outcasts and nomads they were meant to be. Even Ian McKellan's turn as Gandalf lacked the necessary gravitas of the Ring films. The first instalment was only saved by Martin Freeman's excellent turn as Bilbo, plus of course Andy Serkis ending the film on a high note as Gollum.

But at least the meddling with the original story line was kept to a minimum and the padding out seemed less noticeable to me.

This second part however is a different matter. Great liberties have been taken with Tolkien's source material. A major character (Tauriel) has been introduced that didn't even exist in the book and appears to have been brought in simply to add a "love interest" story within a story. Legolas (who didn't appear in the book either) has been ridiculously pimped up to almost make him some kind of invincible superhero - so much so that it's hardly worth the Orcs turning up to the fight as they seemingly present no real threat whatsoever.
