Book Description

6 May 2013

While to many, LEGO bricks are 'just a toy', to an ever-growing army of fans they provide a challenging and enjoyable modelling medium. These fans, calling themselves 'AFOLs', or Adult Fans of LEGO, have taken it upon themselves to recreate local landmarks using just the bricks that you may find at a local store.

LEGO models created by adult fans, however, don't resemble those that many people created as a child. Created by masters of their medium, these fabulously detailed models may contain thousands of pieces - or perhaps just a handful. Either way, the talented artists have an intimate knowledge of every piece and colour available. Skilfully choosing the ideal piece to recreate a well-known landmark, they may create a model indistinguishable from the real thing, or evoke the spirit of a building in just a few small pieces.

In fact, landmarks and cityscapes - from the New York skyline to the Sagrada Familia, London's St Pancras and the amazing towers of Beijing and Hong Kong - have long been a source of inspiration for LEGO builders. In this book, LEGO artist Warren Elsmore takes us on a world tour and explores more than 12 global cities and their iconic structures. Each city is examined and recreated in LEGO form.

Comprising amazing artwork, exploratory photographs and detailed breakdowns, Brick City looks at the essence of what makes an urban landscape recognizable.

Review

'If you are one of the many who think modern Lego is too easy, with its specially designed pieces, this will renew your faith in the magic Danish brick. And for everyone, this is an opportunity to boggle at the obsessive ingenuity of what are known as AFOLs (adult fans of Lego).' -- Rowan Moore, The Telegraph

'AFOL (adult fans of LEGO) are on the rise and we reckon there will be a few more after people see Warren Elsmore's new book Brick City: LEGO for Grown Ups where he painstakingly creates international landmarks and shows you step by step guides of how to do the same.' -- Time Out

'Comprising amazing artwork, exploratory photographs and detailed breakdowns, Brick City looks at the essence of what makes an urban landscape recognizable.' --Gizmodo.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Crammed Full of Lego Buildings 2 May 2013
Format:Hardcover
This small Lego book punches above it's weight (and size). It is choc-full of amazing models at all scales, from the gargantuan to the tinìest micro-scale works. Photography and printing is of a high quality throughout. The text is well written and informative. I like the way how acknowledgement is given to both the architect of the real world building, as well as the designer of the Lego version.

Although the page size is small, there's two massive fold out posters included on the inside and outside flaps.
Instructions are given to help you recreate the smaller models. It really is hard to see how the publishers could have packed any more in for the price.

Absolutely terrific.

What more can I say? This is Lego. It does have a great deal of ideas for grown-up kids to design. I've had fun trying to build some of the houses.

Warren Elsmore has achieved a wonderful feat with this book. It's beautifully put together with high quality colour throughout. From the introductory explanations through to the many step by step guides to creating the smaller creations (the Collosseum is the largest!) and then on, with pictures of the authors larger, more commercial builds it is informative , inspiring and a joy to read. If you love lego and have a ton of bricks lying around get this book. If you just love lego, buy it anyway, you'll soon be itching to go out and buy some bricks as well.
