I put off buying an E-reader for ages, as I love the look & feel of a real book. I was convinced that one of "those kindle things" would not be a satisfactory alternative.
However, real books take up a lot of space & if you are like me and like to keep books to read again later you eventually run out of room for them all.
So I finally took the plunge, and it arrived the following day. My first impression, after removing it from one of the easiest to open boxes I have ever encountered, was "It that it? It is rather small." Not one to be put off I turned it on. I was very pleasantly surprised to find it came pre-set up, by Amazon, with all my account details. All I had to do was enter my Wi-Fi password and select the correct dictionary. Could not have been easier.
Reading the pre-loaded user guide was a doddle. By the time I had finished I had decided that it was definitely very easy to use. The "next page" buttons are very well located, and sit just under my thumbs regardless as to which hand I hold it in, and it weighs next to nothing.
I thought the background colour a bit grey, but comparing it to a paperback a few years old showed that the book was a pale yellow with the kindle a pale grey. In other words it was no worse that a book. Stepping outside into bright sunlight the background became a much crisper white.
So, I bought a book, a cheap one, and was very impressed how quickly it downloaded. I started to read it, and a while later realised that it was as good as a book, just different.
The only thing I do not like (and it's not enough to make me not like the devise) is the very slight ghosting that occurs, and the method used to clear it. Every new page shows a very very faint impression of the previous page. Amazon (or the makers of the E-ink screens) are clearly aware of this as every few pages (4? 5?) the screen does a "self-clean" where it goes very quickly "all black, all white" to clean off the ghosting. Initially this "Black/white" flicker is off-putting, but after only a few hours I am getting used to it, and I imagine I will soon hardly notice it at all.
Pro's:
Perfect size for the hand.
Perfectly located "next page" buttons.
Light weight.
Ease of set up.
Crisp, clear text.
Long battery life.
Glare free screen.
Looks good.
Con's:
The "ghosting removal" process.
If you drop a book while reading in the bath the book will survive, I doubt this will. ;)
Overall: This is a "keeper!" and it is a more than satisfactory alternative to a real book.

My wonderful new Kindle
I was lucky enough to receive my kindle for Christmas from my Son Mark and as an avid reader cannot believe what I have done without it. It is light, easy to read and exceptionally easy to download new books even for those of advanced years. I purchased a lovely pink cover for this item and even with that the whole thing is so compact and mobile. I would wholeheartedly recommend this product for all ages I just love mine.
