Book Description

29 Mar 2007

Award-winning American novelist Nicole Krauss first captivated readers with her groundbreaking debut novel Man Walks into a Room, a novel in which Krauss explores what it is to lose one's identity and what it is to discover what makes us human.

Samson Greene has been missing for eight days when he is discovered wandering through the Nevada desert, 'ragged as a crow' and with no idea who he is. He is rushed to hospital where doctors save his life, but all his memories after the age of twelve have been permanently lost. Now, as he looks around the beautiful apartment he apparently shares with his wife and which is filed with all the souvenirs of a life well lived, Samson feels nothing more than a vague admiration.

In her first novel Nicole Krauss tells the story of a man suddenly liberated from the life he has made, disconnected from the people who have defined him. Withdrawing from a wife he has no memory of loving, Samson plunges weightless into the future. But when he agrees to participate in a revolutionary experiment, what he experiences a revelation of what it means to be human.

'Krauss celebrates the anything-but-simple art of human connection' San Francisco Chronicle

'You'll savour the last page - and be hungry for future work from this talented author' The Washington Post Book World

Nicole Krauss is an American bestselling author who has received international critical acclaim for her first three novels: Great House (shortlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction 2011), The History of Love (Shortlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction 2006 and winner of the 2006 Prix du Meilleur Livre Étranger) and Man Walks into a Room all of which are available in Penguin paperback.

1.0 out of 5 stars Forgetting it already 27 Nov 2010
By Cake
Format:Paperback
Coming at this fresh from Krauss' literary achievement, second novel 'A History of Love', it was hugely disappointing. And it's a shame that many readers who come across this first won't make it to the second book.

If her editor had been more brave the sci-fi hokum tacked absurdly into the middle of this novel - like finding a spicy potato wedge stuck in your ice-cream - would have been dispensed with. (Hang on... that just might work.) And once you've cut the enigmatic desert scene - ripped from 'Paris, Texas' - and various bits pinched from other films - and lose the TV melodramtics when he goes back to his childhood home - and the numerous incongruities that are not accounted for when a man reverts to his 12 year old self but is still 'a grown man' - phew, you'd probably end up with a thoughtful mid-life-crisis short story of perhaps 15 pages. It would be quality, though as Krasss could even then muster the occasional sensitive insight. This is why it deserves at least one star - while at times it's like reading a precocious school-kid's English homework there is a flash of incisive observation about life the universe and - well maybe not quite 'everything' - for that you'd just have to take a chance and get her follow-up, 'A History of Love'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Courageous debut 29 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
Having enjoyed NS's magnificent and touching second ("The History of Love") and third novel ("The Great House") earlier, her debut novel is a bit disappointing. This reader did not feel the urgency of the later books. Surely, it is well-researched and competently put on paper, but it lacks the passionate combination of brilliant plotting and imagination, warmth and energy of her two later novels. On the back cover it is said [by the Washington Post] that the book's final page is worth savoring. This reader stared and stared, wondering what he missed and feels stupid.
The novel is about memory loss and memory transfer and is situated in New York, Nevada and California. The story: (1) a dirty, dehydrated man in a suit is found by Nevada highway police and hospitalized. He does not know his own name. He turns out to be Samson Greene (SG), a 36-year old Columbia University professor from New York, declared missing by his wife and his English Literature department.(2) the hospital in Las Vegas finds a brain tumor and removes it quickly. It may have been the cause of SG's westward trip. After the operation, he remembers only his first 12 years in California: his memory loss started in New York and his move westward was homeward, to his mother. (3) back in NY, his initial key interests and fears are those of a 12-year old. Samson does not recognize anything because the last 24 years of his memory have evaporated. His wife Anna, dog Frank, apartment, friends, colleagues? Nothing. But looking over his apartment fills him with some pride. (4) Tests or therapy cannot restore the 24 lost years, but show that Samson is still highly intelligent and that his brain picks up and stores every new event and experience perfectly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another good read 25 Jun 2007

I had been looking out for another Nicole Krauss book after i had read A History of Love. I fell into this book immeadiately but then half way through I thought the plot went a little odd, I wondered if this could actually happen in real life. However it did not put me off finishing this book and i can say i really enjoyed it, particularly the epilogue which i had to reread. ALl in all another great book. I hope there's another to read soon.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very interesting read 17 Sep 2009
Format:Paperback
This was disturbing, reality was twisted enough to challenge one's concepts, yet sufficiently slightly to seem reasonably possible.
It achieved its apparent objective of forcing you to consider what constitutes a human being, and what can be removed yet still leave that person who they are.
It also asks the question of whhether anything can be added without violating your integrity
