5.0 out of 5 stars SVENGALI
The film is funny, endearing, surreal, true to life, a real hit, as are the cast! Really, This Years Must See. Came away feeling, happy and positive!

Jonny Owen and Vicky McClure are a true inspiration and restore the faith of genuine, amazing people in life! Such grounded people, sound couple, who ooze personality and genuianity! A couple who always happy to...

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I'm confused at reading the other inexplicably positive reviews for this film. It's really very poor and, aside from a few surprising cameo appearances, cannot be commended. In a nutshell this film is old fashioned, cheesy and unfunny. If that's your thing then fill your boots!

Saw this film at Edinburgh Film Festival and followed the webisodes, and found the film very light and funny, with a steady plot, but a must watch for any fan of the british pop culture.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not that many laughs, but really enjoyable film, 10 April 2014

C. Davis "Carl" (Burton, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I saw the trailers for this film, and thought it looked really good. The music in the soundtrack also appealed to me, so thought I would give it a go.

I was expecting it to be funnier than it was. There are a couple of funny moments, but I didn't find myself laughing that much. Having said that, I really enjoyed the film from beginning to end, and found myself really sympathising with the characters.

Great soundtrack, some great cameos from Carl Barat and Alan McGee, and just a really enjoyable British indie film..

A great watch. Recommend this film fully. The soundtrack itself is immense, with a fantastic set of great british actors and some superb cameo roles. Yes I'm biased as my mate wrote the film but honest trust me on this its a great film!

Really positive, likeable heart warming film. Wannerbee music mogul "Dixie" tries his hand as a band manager and becomes the classic British underdog that we all want to succeed. Great cameos - look out particularly for Martin Freeman, Matt Berry (really hilarious) and Katy Brand.

Fantastic soundtrack rounds off a wonderful film

5.0 out of 5 stars The coolest feel-good film of the year., 6 Mar 2014
This review is from: Svengali [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
Svengali tells the story of Dixie (Jonny Owen), a postman from South Wales, and a music fanatic. All his life he's dreamed of discovering a great band and then one day, trawling through YouTube, he finds them... 'The Premature Congratulations'. He hunts them down and offers them his management services. They are young, arrogant, sexy and utterly magnificent. Putting their demo on a cassette tape, Dixie heads out onto the streets of London... Innocent, wide-eyed Dixie embarks on a roller coaster ride through the most infamous industry of them all. His partner and his sanity through it all is his soulmate Michelle (Vicky McClure). Every day is a battle for Dixie, totally broke and working for nothing to get his beloved band gigs, their egos grow with their stardom. The more successful The Prems get, the greater the chances are of Dixie losing them. He has to decide what are his real priorities in life... his love of music or his love for Michelle.

A great film with an excellent cast and brilliant soundtrack.

5.0 out of 5 stars Feel good fun, 28 Mar 2014

Was lucky enough to see this last week at one of the screenings with a Q&A; with Jonny Owen and Vicky McClure. Excellent film with a stellar cast last. Brilliantly funny and full of heart. One of the best Brit flicks I have seen in a while.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Stunning Film, 1 April 2014

This review is from: Svengali [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
I can't comment on the quality of the DVD, but I can comment on the quality of the comedy, cast and directing of the film. Not only is it a heart warming, genuinely hilarious piece, it has one of the best assembled casts of any British independent film. It's an absolute pleasure to watch and a must see for lovers of British cinema.

A credit to Jonny Owen, he's made something truly spectacular.
