Product Description

Sequel to national best sellers Torch of Freedom and Crown of Slaves, book three in the Crown of Slaves-Honor Harrington universe. Secret agent Anton Zilwicki and Victor Cachat return in this classic tie-in series set in David Weber's Honorverse.

Toil and trouble in the cauldron of ghosts

The Mesan Alignment: a centuries-old cabal that seeks to impose its vision of a society dominated by genetic rank onto the human race. Now the conspiracy stands exposed by spies Anton Zilwicki and Victor Cachat - one an agent of Honor Harringtons Star Kingdom of Manticore, the other a Havenite operative. The outing of the Alignment has turned the galaxys political framework topsy-turvy. Old coalitions have disintegrated. New alliances have been born.

For starters, the long and hard-fought war between the Republic of Haven and the Star Empire of Manticore is not only over, but these bitter enemies have formed a new pact. Their common foe: the Mesan Alignment itself.

But more information is needed to bring the Alignment out of the shadows. Now, defying the odds and relying on genetic wizardry themselves for a disguise, Zilwicki and Cachat return to Mesa - only to discover that even they have underestimated the Alignments ruthlessness and savagery.

Soon they are on the run in Mesas underworld, not only hunted by the Alignment but threatened by the exploding conflict on the planet between Mesas overlords and the brutalized slaves and descendants of slaves who have suffered under their rule for so long. But if Zilwicki and Cachat succeed in rooting out the ancient conspiracy, a great evil may be finally removed from the galaxy - and on a long-oppressed planet, freedom may finally dawn.

4.0 out of 5 stars A distinct improvement 25 Mar 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Whilst there are a couple of the chapters transplanted from other branches of the series that have become common (for reasons I understand but annoy me) in the 'Honorverse', and the book (or at least the kindle version) could have done with another proof-read, I really liked this book.

Particularly after the first third, it has both the overarching plot contained within a single book that is missing from too many of the recent books in the series, and the mini-plots which are interesting in themselves as well as feeding the series narrative. This is so much better than most of the recent books, perhaps reflecting the fact that wars are generally much more 'exciting' when loosing is understood to be a realistic prospect. If you were, like I was, wondering whether it was worth buying this, buy it.

Obviously the warning about this book being so deep into the series that you shouldn't read this without having read the rest of them applies.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pity - I used to like Weber's books 13 April 2014
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm also beginning to distrust anything co-authored with Eric Flint.
It's annoying to have to get out the previous three or four books, find the date pages in them, cross-correlate and then discover that this book only advances the whole story by two months. This is especially true when it's too thick to read in one go (570 or so pages) and really doesn't hold the attention well enough to encourage that either.
I'd almost say wait until you can get a secondhand copy but that means that there have to be enough mugs to buy it in the first place and who feel it's worth selling-on rather than burning.

4.0 out of 5 stars cauldron of ghosts 21 Mar 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Another interesting addition to the Honorverse, based around Victor Cachet and crew and an intelligence mission to Mesa. Not the best book in the series but a worthwhile addition to the series. Thank goodness David Webber is so prolific a writer. Bring on the next instalment.
