A really good product that my son loves.

The negatives: (It might seem like a long list, but it's all about the assembly - once it's fitted it's great)
a) Assembling it is like putting together a giant meccano set. It comes totally disassembled with a bag of nuts and bolts. I found it easy to assemble, but I'm an engineer. The instructions are confusing, particularly the incomprehensible section about attaching the ubolt to the childs bike using different methods depending on the size of the bike. I gave up reading and just used common sense.
b)If they redesigned the fiddly Ubolt bracket arrangement to the child's bike, I would give it 5 stars. The U bolts are waaaaaaay too long, so you have to use a spanner instead of a socket to do them up (yawn!), and when done up you have 4 long bolts sticking out from the front of your child's bike. They have provided some deformed plastic cover and some plastic end caps to prevent impalement, but surely it would be easier to provide some sensibly sized fixings?
c)It claims that once installed, you can attach/detach the towaway without tools, but I found that with my big monkey hands, and the stupidly long u bolts, I couldn't get enough grip on the QR lever /bolt to tighten it up enough, so had to use my multitool pliers instead.

The positives:
a) Once assembled and attached, it's sturdy, stable and allows children to ride along at your pace without the adult having to constantly be on the lookout for life threatening hazards.
b) I really like the stow-away function where you can detach it from the child's bike and clip it onto a bracket on your rear chain stay.
c) I was a bit dubious about the plastic stay that prevents the child turning the handlebars, but in practice it works really well.
d) It's like having a small boost motor attached to your bike when your child decides to pedal. A small motor that yells "I'm catching you up Daddy!"

I bought two of these Gators so that me and the wife could take our grandchildren further afield. To this end they are perfect allthough we find that with the older grandchild it has a tendancy to pull her cycle at a slight angle, even though we have checked alignment. Also the braket that stay attached the the childrens cycles cuts in to the front stem tubing. I tightened the 'U' bolts with a torque wrench to the recommended torque but the brackets cut in to the alloy tubing and chip off the paint. The other problem is the quick release bolt that attaches the gator to the childs bike. One of the tightening levers snapped off on the second use, and the second one looks like it is heading the way as it's becoming loose on the spindle. I am now trying to arrange with Amazon to replace just the faulty items without having to send the whole items back and the associated dismantling that comes with it.

If you are wondering whether this is the thing for you ....just do it. The trailgator is fantastic, after about an 3/4 hour setting up properly and ensuring everything is really tight, we were off.
Our daughter had outgrown the bike seat and is still biking with stabilisers, but using the trailgator means we can hook her up and go as a family on a decent length bike ride, and she is completely happy and safe. Would certainly reccommend this product.

I might be speaking too soon, having used it only once so far, but I absolutely love it. Seen it in Halfords for £90 first, then checked the price on amazon. £40 including delivery. I previously had to balance my 4-yarold's bike on the handle bars, while husband took care of the tired little legs. This time she asked to go on daddies' bike after a long run, but we had a trick up our sleeve! Quickly attached her bike to mine - and we were away! Have to say that it took my husband the whole day to assemble it due to the little one's aluminium bike frame, but it solved the problem of tired little legs. Seen another one today with a smaller little girl on it. She was leaning to one side a lot, but she managed to hold on and was pedalling with all her might (bless) to help her dad. I personally did not have any problems, although felt quite apprehensive. It works wonderfully and so far, we all are very pleased with our purchase.

Update 03/01/11. We've had it a while now and used it havily, but what we found is that our daughter is so used to being attached to me, she doesn't want to ride by herself. We started using it before she learnt to ride, so that we could go longer distances, but it put her off learning and took her confidence away. The tracks around our area were not very good, hilly and bumpy. It is only last summer that they've tarmaked a good section of the trail and we were able to start teaching her to ride by herself (age 5). And this is when we've discovered the problem. Therefore, I would recommend that if you do use it, let the children ride independantly as well.
Also we found that this second summer we had it, the leaning became worse. It wants looking at and adjusting before we can use it again. I am still happy with this product, but, having learnt from my mistakes, I came to a conclusion that it wants using sensibly if your child can't ride independantly yet.

Brought this through Amazon, since half the price of shops (Halfords currently over £100!!). Yes it it tricky to fix the bracket to the childs bike and instructions aren't the clearest, but once your on and away it is brilliant. Would definately recommend.
