Product description

Out Among The Stars is a remarkable new album comprised of 12 recently discovered Johnny Cash studio recordings. The tracks were originally recorded in Nashville in 1981 and 1984 and produced by Billy Sherrill. The album features duets with June Carter Cash and Waylon Jennings plus songs penned by Cash himself. The recordings, which have never been released in any form, are not demos, outtakes or alternate versions. They remained in the vaults during the years Columbia Records released Johnny Cash's last albums for the label and were subsequently forgotten. The recordings first surfaced in 2012, when John Carter Cash was cataloging his father's and mother's exhaustive archives. "When my parents passed away, it became necessary to go through this material," he says. "We found these recordings that were produced by Billy Sherrill in the early 1980s…they were beautiful." Out Among The Stars is a great lost Johnny Cash album connecting the revolutionary rockabilly of his Sun Records years to the epochal final albums he made for American Recordings. Thirty years in the making, Out Among The Stars is a classic Johnny Cash album, about to be heard for the very first time.

Great album....rare version of I'm Moving On.

Historic recordings from a still fruitful period when ironically Columbia has placed him out of contract.

This previously unreleased album from 1983, re-discovered after 30 years by John Carter-Cash captures Johnny at his vibrant best.

The album contains songs that are echoes of classic albums from 10 years or so previously and also some songs that would fit into the American series some 10 to 19 years later.

This is no "outtakes" album it is a genuine studio album with great sound, benefitting in no doubt from modern day re-mastering.

Why unreleased at the time? Probably due to a perception of not being "cool" at that time. Looking at this with the knowledge of history demonstrates how wrong and perhaps irrelevant the notion of being "cool" or "on trend" is with regards to music. The important element is the quality, does it tell a story, does it make you tap your feet, does it do so without being cheesy, are real instruments being played as opposed to synthesised? These are factors that make timeless, quality popular music.

All the songs are great. Here are a few that I particularly enjoyed:

"I'm Movin' On" is given a great interpretation by Johnny featuring Waylon Jennings. This is a song that Elvis fans will be aware of from his classic 1969 album "From Elvis In Memphis".

"If I Told You Who It Was", is a classic piece of Johnny Cash comedy, storytelling about a fan who is invited by a female country star to change her punctured car tyre, leading to a romantic encounter.

"I Came To Believe" is a definite look forward to the style of the American Recordings with its theme of redemption.

Another track that could easily find a place on one of those latter day, celebrated albums is "She Used To Love Me A Lot", which captures Johnny in a moment of reflection.

This album deserves to finally get it's release and I hope that it is appreciated and gains success.

I am pleased to note that this has reached No. 4 in the UK, No. 3 on US Pop and No. 1 on US Country. So, timeless quality prevails.

A real find. Before this album I had the best of Jonny Cash album which I do love, but it is the only 'country and western' album in my music collection. A friend recommended this to me after hearing just one track and I'm so glad I bought it. Put together from recordings found by his son, this is Jonny Cash at his best. A good mix of upbeat to melancholy, humour to thought provoking and the sadness that sometimes comes with Cash. If you're thinking about buying this, then go for it.

I've played this everyday since getting it from Amazon on it's UK release day and it's really grown on me. It's hard to believe it wasn't released back in 1984 but I probably wouldn't have given it a go back then... that's what maturity does for you I guess! Anyway, it's a great album with two fine duets with June Carter Cash and a sensational duet with Waylon Jennings on 'I'm movin on'. I love the humour on 'If I told you who it was' and 'I drove her out of my mind'. Cash's voice is a bit of a let down on 'After all' but the emotion is there and he's in fine voice for the rest of the album. If I could, I'd score it 11 out of 12 but have given it a 5. Recommended!

Im so glad this cd is good,i honestly was a little worried if im honest but im really enjoying listening to it on my way home from work in the car. I find a lot of 80s music to be quite "Safe" and with the label of the time not thinking it worthy of a release i was worried in case it didn't match Cash's high quality standard of previous releases......i should never of doubted the man in black, his voice is at its best...the tunes more than match the test of time....two tracks stand out...She used to love me a lot and Rock n roll shoes.....if your a Cash fan....i'm sure you have it on order....if not...Buy it.....its a worthy addition to your Cash collection!!!

Johnny Cash is sadly missed. I have been a fan for as long as I can remember. Through out the years from his early to the late his voice has grown stronger and better, so when news of his lost album came to light I waited for the release and boy was I surprised at the quality of the songs. 5 stars is not enough and this is one album is a must for any one not just JC fans. Since buying this Album I have not stopped playing it. This is the right time for the release that takes you back to pure country sounds. Please find more unreleased songs. Live in our hearts and for ever-more JC. A true Country Entertainer

5.0 out of 5 stars Bellissimo album registrato negli Anni 80 e rimasto inedito
Reviewed in Italy on 29 January 2021

Be sure to read the liner notes, written by his son John.

A great addition to the discs I have in my car - Johnny keeps me company on the road!

I'd go with all the other reviewers; almost always do. This is a very good record, and when you compare it to the mindless sludge of the current whatever the eff it is that is Country these days, the stuff that our dear Dale Watson regularly disses, meaning Mr Vegas to be Blake Ess, it's kind of a beacon to a distant shore, and a much richer, far more fertile land.

The song choices are all great. The sense of humor rattles through a lot of the pieces, actually...I was thinking of the payoff on I told you who it was.... I think we all know it was DP. (Oh my.) The Minnie Pearl bit is priceless. And remember that this is the man who did a lot of humorous songs, including a dog and a deranged men with a silly name. Humor is the road to enlightenment.

Not to bore you. These are excellent songs, to a piece, and John Carter did a superior job of curating them. The voice is everything you'd want from Cash and more. If you listen to his slides down notes, amazing. Hitting the notes head on first off. Amazing. The gravitas of a man who's been to the underworld and resurfaced more or less intact, amazing. I don't think one song has sent as many chills down my spine as "She used to love me a lot." There is no better song about regret, ever, in the canon of popular music.

So when all is said and done, this is a must have record for any Cash fan, or anyone interested in how great storytelling songs, sung by a great storyteller, matter. And they do and will.

Oh. And the Costello remix is something that ought to be on some soundtrack, movie or TV, because it's got the eerie quality that makes for perfect titles. Somebody do this. And somebody do a total remix CD of Cash, a la Costello, because that voice can carry about anything you twist around it. Nobody else can do what Cash did to put trouble to mind to voice.

I miss you, Johnny and June. Wish we'd met. I'll always remember seeing you up close at the Pantages, and the nod Joe Strummer and I gave each other, coming in and out of the bar during the intermission. Everyone knew we were in the presence. And sitting right behind Tom Petty as he howled applause. It was magic. Memory matters.
