4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 19,918 ratings

They're called Lincoln Lawyers: the bottom of the legal food chain, the criminal defence attorneys who operate out of the back of a Lincoln Town Car, taking whatever cases the system throws in their path.

Mickey Haller has been in the business a long time, and he knows just how to work it. When a Beverly Hills rich boy is arrested for brutally beating a woman, Haller has his first high-paying client in years. The evidence mounts on the defence's side, and Haller might even be in the rare position of defending a client who is actually innocent.

But when his case starts to fall apart and neither the suspect nor the victim are quite who they seem, Haller quickly discovers that when you swim with the sharks, it's easy to wind up as prey.

Review

The first legal thriller from Detective Harry Bosch creator Michael Connelly is a knockout ... Oozing hard-boiled Los Angeles attitude both in the car and in the courtroom, Mickey's a treat (TIME OUT)

There are moments of real tension, before Connelly, the master storyteller, comes up with a solution worthy of John Grisham. A fine start to a welcome new series (
SUNDAY TELEGRAPH)

A legal thriller may be a new departure for Michael Connelly, but it has all the hallmarks that have rightly made his Harry Bosch books so popular: credible characters, skilful scene-setting, a gripping plot and utter authenticity (
EVENING STANDARD)

Potent, stand-alone thriller ... Brilliantly plotted and played out, with court scenes which winch up the tension to breaking point. New territory for Connelly, author of the peerless Harry Bosch series, but immediately expert, exciting and absorbing. Connelly writes the kind of book that dares you to put it down. Chances are that you won't. Too much is likely to happen while you leave it unattended (
LITERARY REVIEW)

THE LINCOLN LAWYER is a pitch-perfect LA noir legal thriller that proves what I've been thinking for a long time now, that Michael Connelly is one of the very best writers working today in any genre. A modern Raymond Chandler for what he calls 'the world without truth' (Carlos Ruiz Zafon
SUNDAY TELEGRAPH)

The thriller of the year (
THE MIRROR)

a gripping read that keeps one enthralled to the last page (

I read the book as I liked the film. The book is even better. It is hard to put down as the action is fast and continuous. Great story line and surprising twist at the end.

3.5-4*
Mickey Haller is a defence lawyer who works from his car – a Lincoln town car – he is brought in by a bondsman to meet a potential client Louis Roulet he’s up on assault and attempted rape charges. Haller considers it a possible ‘gravy train’ or franchise case – a case that will warrant his highest rates, could well involve appeals (further charges) and if he does well some great recommendations to more potential clients. It looks good and Haller agrees to meet with Roulet.

A great deal of the first half of the book is setting the way in which Haller works, his life, the cases he works and starts to give a really interesting insight into the U.S. legal system. He takes the case on.

The book begins to pick up about 40-45% of the way in when Haller begins to realise that his client may not be the innocent he claimed to be. He gets his private investigator and friend to check out a number of angles in the case and another one from the past.

His private life also unfolds as we read this first in the series he has two ex wives one is a prosecutor, with whom he has a daughter, the other works as his assistant.

He is gutted when he realises how this new case is linked to the old one and he wants to do the right thing but it could compromise his legal standing. Still he decides to go ahead with the help of his friend but it gets worse when this friend, the P.I., is killed. Will this undermine his plan? Will he be accused of his murder?

Michael Connelly writes this complicated story well the second half of the book is gripping and holds your attention through Roulet’s court case and after as Haller realises his plan may backfire and put not only his own life but that of his loved ones into grave danger.

There are twists and turns, tension and a well written plot which ultimately made this a book worth reading. I didn’t like many of the characters but I don’t think that matters. Haller himself is quite intriguing but not necessarily likeable – even though his ex-wives seem to have a soft spot for him!

If you like courtroom drama and investigation from a different (non-police) point of view this may well be the book and series for you. It’s well written, as you would expect from an author of Michael Connelly’s experience, and very engaging.

It took me a little while, I’m not sure why, but once I got into this book I enjoyed it.

After looking through my large collection of legal thrillers last week for an Instagram post, I began to wonder if there was any ‘must read’ legal thriller I didn’t own. This lead me down a Google rabbit hole of list after list of top legal thriller titles. One book appeared on all of them, and it was the number one book on a list of top legal thrillers as judged by lawyers (which would seem to be the highest accolade a legal thriller can get.) That book was The Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connelly.

I remember watching the movie starring Matthew McConaughey years ago, but I couldn’t remember the story, and I haven’t read the book, so I decided to rectify that oversight immediately and bought a copy. You can’t have an outstanding collection of legal thrillers without the top one, can you, regardless of whether you have a copy of everything John Grisham has ever written!

The Lincoln Lawyer is a fairly meaty tome, with around 450 pages, but the action and pace is frenetic from beginning to end. The protagonist is Michael Haller, twice-divorced defence (sorry, I just can’t bring myself to spell it the American way *shudder*) attorney who works out of the back of his car, hustling for briefs from drug dealers, street walkers and anyone else who can afford to pay his fees. Unexpectedly, a rich client falls into his lap, and one who seems to be innocent of the crime he has been charged with, a case too good to be true. But, as Michael’s father once said, ‘there is no client as scary as an innocent man.’

So begins a tale full of twists and unexpected turns, as Micheal fights to get his client acquitted and the victim shown up as the lying chancer she is. But obviously, it’s not that simple and, throughout the 450 pages, Michael plays a game of wits against a devious adversary who will stop at nothing to make sure the truth never comes out. I found the plot completely gripping, and wished I’d had more time to devote to reading it because I didn’t really want to put it down once I’d started. Unfortunately, the arrival of a new puppy prevented that, but I raced through it as fast as I could.

Anyway, I can see why lawyers love this book, it gives great descriptions of the trial process and the cut and thrust of adversarial law, without being dry and dull, or at least I thought so. The plot is clever, with enough surprises to keep the reader guessing to the end, and Haller is an appealing character to carry us through, which is no mean feat, considering what a loathed and ridiculed breed lawyers often are. I’m going to watch the movie again this afternoon while I do my ironing, as I have no memory of it really and I’m interested to see how it compares to the book while that is fresh in my mind. (Matthew McConaughey gives good lawyer too, his Jake Brigance in A Time To Kill is one of my favourite of his performances.)

This book is a great addition to my collection of legal thrillers, and definitely a must read for anyone who loves the genre. Do you have any other recommendations for me?

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling Courtroom Drama: A Stellar Debut in 'The Lincoln Lawyer
Reviewed in the United States on 30 November 2023
Michael Connelly's "The Lincoln Lawyer," the first book in its series, is a riveting legal thriller that marks a stellar debut for its compelling protagonist, Mickey Haller. Connelly masterfully intertwines the gritty realism of courtroom drama with the complex inner workings of the legal system, delivering an enthralling narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats.

The character of Mickey Haller is brilliantly crafted, embodying a perfect blend of professional savvy and personal vulnerability. His unconventional practice from the back of his Lincoln town car adds a unique flavor to the story, making him an instantly memorable character in the world of legal fiction.

Connelly's expertise in crime and legal procedure shines through in every page, ensuring that the plot is not only engaging but also authentic. The twists and turns of the courtroom battles are cleverly plotted, with surprises that are both shocking and satisfying. The supporting cast of characters is equally well-developed, each adding depth and complexity to the narrative.

What sets "The Lincoln Lawyer" apart is Connelly's ability to weave a morally complex tale that challenges the reader's perceptions of justice and redemption. The book doesn't shy away from exploring the darker corners of the legal world, yet it does so with a sense of hope and humanity.

In summary, "The Lincoln Lawyer" is a must-read for fans of legal thrillers. Connelly's razor-sharp writing and his deep understanding of the legal system make this book a standout in the genre. It's a compelling, thought-provoking read that establishes Mickey Haller as one of the most intriguing characters in contemporary fiction.

The Lincoln Lawyer series are, to me, every bit as good as the Harry Bosch series. This is maybe the best I've read so far, an outstanding plot... When it comes to gritty American courtroom/crime thriller novels, nobody does it better than Michael Connelly.

I have always liked the legal thrillers and this is arguably the best work I have read so far.
