After having read Ring of Fire and Valentino Rossi's autobiography, I was naturally drawn to reading Lorenzo's story. In MotoGP's all-time standings, Lorenzo and Pedrosa are the closest to Rossi (Greatest of All Time or GOAT) and Stoner among the current competing MotoGP premiere riders although they are still quite a distance in terms of Championships, victories, podium finishes, and fastest laps.

Jorge Lorenzo has sparked a great deal of controversy when he became Rossi's teammate in the Fiat-Yamaha MotoGP factory team in 2008-2010. Lorenzo's book revealed much of the backdoor drama between the 2 riders, and talked much about the infamous wall. What Lorenzo said corresponded to a lot of comments riders and journalists have made over the years regarding Rossi. Those comments showed that Rossi tended to befriend you if you were not a threat to him, and that he would ride dirty if it meant him beating you on the track. His tactics were famously shown in the 2008 Laguna Seca GP where he pulled a number of risky stunts against Stoner. It was also clear that Rossi did not feel threatened by Hayden or Edwards, as demonstrated with the openly shared paddock space in the Ducati Corse area. When the cameras show Hayden, you can sometimes see Rossi in the background in his paddock area not separated by a wall.

Back to the book: I am a very objective reader, I don't come into the book with any preconceived ideas because if I did, it would make reading very boring. The book doesn't have any structure, which appears to be the typical SOP with MotoGP-based books. They skip around different years and subjects and there is no logical order. Most of Lorenzo's book focused on his 125cc and 250cc career, while the 3rd edition included updates that take the reader to the conclusion of the 2010 season where Lorenzo secured the world championship.

Lorenzo claimed to want readers to enjoy the book, but I honestly didn't feel drawn into the story. The 125cc and 250cc classes don't interest me as much as the premiere class. However, I did learn that Lorenzo enjoys reading books and watching movies. He comes off as a respectable rider but I didn't find him very interesting. I do understand how others could perceive him as arrogant or copying Rossi, it's just a matter of convenience or coincidence and the natural trait of being a champion. Some of the other riders have a different attitude, and good examples are Colin Edwards, Troy Bayliss, and Casey Stoner who are determined when they are on the track, but also appear easy going with good sportsmanship conduct.

As I wrote before, I didn't find the book very interesting outside of the chapters/sections devoted to MotoGP. Lorenzo fans should definitely read this book, but as a motorcycle rider and MotoGP fan I found this book to be good but not great. The only technical tip I found was a discussion of trail braking with Michelin and Bridgestone tires on page 371. Apparently the Bridgestones had better grip even when leaned, so that trail braking was essential in maintain higher cornering speeds while this wasn't easily done on the Michelins that Lorenzo grew accustomed to during his rookie premiere class season.
