Review

'If there's one thing I love, a guilty but undeniable pleasure, it's a cracking procedural serial murder thriller. Broken Dolls has it all. Horrifying evil, a brilliant, conflicted profiler and cracking pace and tension. I read it in what seemed like two trembling gulps.'

(Stephen Fry)

'Toe-clenching, nail-biting, peep-from-behind-your-fingers suspense.' (S. J. Bolton)

'Visceral and gripping, Broken Dolls made me gasp in horror. Jefferson Winter is a welcome new genius, and I can't wait to meet him again.' (Neil White)

A crazed serial killer, an eccentric FBI investigator,a tough female cop - all the ingredients here blend to make a brilliant police procedural. Jefferson Winter has to track down a psychopath whose fetish is to lobotomise women. The first of a series, this promises great, grisly things. (Deirdre O'Brien Sunday Mirror)

'Strikingly well-researched and written with a real swagger, it leaves you desperate for more.' (Mail on Sunday)

'The plot device of bringing together the investigation on one side, with Rachel's experience at the hands of her abductor is an effective one...a rapid fire read ' (Euro Crime)

More About the Author

James Carol was born in Scotland in 1969 and moved to England in the eighties. At various times he has worked as a guitarist, sound engineer, guitar tutor, journalist, and a horse riding instructor. Broken Dolls, the first Jefferson Winter book, was released in January 2014 to rave reviews.

Broken Dolls has it all. Horrifying evil, a brilliant, conflicted profiler and cracking pace and tension. I read it in what seemed like two trembling gulps. (Stephen Fry)

Strikingly well-researched and written with a real swagger, it leaves you desperate for more. (The Mail)

'Toe-clenching, nail-biting, peep-from-behind-your-fingers suspense.' (S. J. Bolton)

Although the novels are written as a series, James approaches the books as stand-alones. Each story is set in a different location, and has a different cast of characters. The beauty of this approach is that the novels can be read out of order.

Presumed Guilty, the first in a series of eBooks set during Winter's FBI days will be released in July. Watch Me, the second Jefferson Winter thriller, is scheduled for publication in September 2014.

When he's not writing, James spends his time training horses and riders. An accomplished guitarist, he relaxes by writing and recording music. He lives in Hertfordshire with his wife and two children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very scary 9 Feb 2014

Brilliant, I was totally wrapped up in this book,to such an extent that whilst reading it, my mobile phone rang and I almost jumped out of my skin. It's a good thing that I was reading in bed because my Kindle went flying up in the air as I screamed. No harm done as the Kindle landed on the bed. This is a very tense story which I really enjoyed, didn't want to put it down. Excellent !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! 28 Jan 2014

Thrillers are my favourite genre, and this was one of the best I've read. Fast but not too fast, gripping, just the right amount of characters, just the right amount of tension - a proper ' race against time to catch a psychopath' tale, and I can't wait till the next in the series comes out - for a introduction to a new character , this was just great. Read it in three days, says it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Psychological Crime Thriller 26 Jan 2014
By ACB (swansea) TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Jefferson Winter spent eleven years with the FBI, the last three as chief profiler. A rising star with an unorthodox approach to solving cases that upset his superiors, he left to do freelance consultancy work on a global basis, helping law enforcement agencies with serial killer investigations. Ironic, since his father had been a serial killer of 15 young women over a twelve year period. He was apprehended when Winter was 11 years old. At his execution, his father mouthed three words to him before he died, 'We're the same'. He knew then that he could not work within the constraints of the FBI.

Next move is to London. DI Mark Hatcher has four women, all tortured for months and then lobotomised into a virtual vegetable state. The unknown subject (unsub) who perpetrated these atrocities would not stop until apprehended or killed. Hatcher was getting nowhere. The latest abduction was Rachel Morris. Winter had a crystal ball approach to profiling, whether due to his training and experience or a gift. He would shut his eyes and accurately depict the circumstances of the abductions and the horrors they endured, even to the type of psychopath they were dealing with and the conditions they were kept in. Working with Hatcher and the beautiful DS Sophie Templeton, Winter applies his detective and profiler skills to investigate every clue or lead, even longshots, to trace the villain. He meets the victims and their husbands. All were having affairs at the time of the kidnapping of the women; all had similar features. Winter works out that there are two partners in the kidnaps and torture; one dominant, the other passive but active in the tortures, also dressing them and adding make-up so they appear as mannequins, under the dominant's instruction. They were not killed.
