Product Description

Product Description

Once upon a time, a simple story... The little giraffe was born on 25th May in year 1961...Saint Sophie's day.

In those days, the only animal toys available were farm animals or pet figures...

That is why one day in France a certain Monsieur Rampeau, who was an expert in transforming sap from the hevea tree using the rotational moulding of rubber as a toy-making concept, came up with the idea of designing a giraffe. Such an exotic wildlife figure would be a first on the market, and its size and shape would be ideal for a baby's small hands to grasp.

Sophie the Giraffe, who looked exactly the same then as she does today, went into production on Thursday 25th May.

She was an immediate success. Sophie quickly became a “must have” in baby’s essentials. Designed to stimulate the senses and soothe teething gums, parents recognised right away the benefits of this little giraffe for their child.

By simple word of mouth, the little giraffe's fame spread.

Vulli, a company based in Rumilly in the Haute-Savoie region of France has created an extensive range of Sophie the Giraffe products to compliment the original toy and amuse and soothe babies from birth onwards.

The Double Ice Bite teething ring has 2 water filled rings which can be chilled in the fridge to help soothe sore gums. The soft and chewy rings also double as handles making it easy for baby to hold. Both rings also have a textured surface to gently massage baby’s gums, with the reassuring face of Sophie the Giraffe to comfort baby. Suitable from 3 months onwards.

2.0 out of 5 stars Those hooves are very hard! 4 Aug 2010
The teether looks nice, with a friendly smiley giraffe on it, but the giraffe is VERY hard. The chewy side rings are as you would expect from a water filled teether, but the giraffe is very very hard. My daughter is 5 months and loves putting everything in her mouth at the moment, but she swung the giraffe up and whacked herself in the mouth with the hooves. It must have really hurt because she cried and had a red mark, but she picked it up again and did exactly the same thing. I think Im going to put it away for a few months until she is a bit more coordinated.

I like the Sophie the Giraffe toys and thought the teether was going to be made from the same type of rubbery material as the Pie, Gnon and Chan teethers, because I think they are by the same company. We have a Chan teether and its squidgy natural rubber and my daughter loves it. This teether is not the same. I would recommend buying a teether from the Pie, Gnon and Chan range (search for 'pie gnon chan' and they come up), or just a different water filled teether.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as I thought it would be... 14 Oct 2012
By Tammy
The whole product is quite hard, I thought it would be softer, especially the giraffe part in the middle with its pointy ears. It's bigger than I think it should be as well, for little hands & little mouths to handle, (my baby is 7 months), it's large enough to make it quite awkward. The only way baby can hold it, is by holding the cold teething ice parts, which I didn't think would be a problem before buying it, I didn't think of it, but having it now, it is obvious that-that is a problem, as the centre giraffe can't be held easily by a baby. So hands have to get cold, baby doesn't want to hold it for long.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too hard on the gums 16 Dec 2013
Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this after having the soft Sophie toy-teether, which my baby loved. This one, however, has soft handles but hard "giraffe face" and when I say "hard" I mean "stone hard", it is just pure plastic. The blue handles, however, are softer and can be reasonably bitten. That said, my little one has never tried to bite the handles but the ears and this teether has ended up being completely unused. I gave my baby several teethers for her to choose and not once she kept this one. I would recommend the normal soft Sophie, full body, but not this one.
