Revised edition!

This edition of Sweet Tea and Secrets has been revised and includes new scenes.

When beloved town matriarch Pearl Clemmons dies on a warm June afternoon, the folks of Adams Grove, Virginia, can hardly believe it. Sure, Pearl was eighty-five years old, but everyone—particularly her granddaughter Jill—just assumed she would live forever. Now Jill must return home to settle Pearl’s estate, comfort a town in mourning…and face Garrett Malloy, the man who broke her heart years ago.

Making matters worse, a string of break-ins at the Clemmons place has Jill and the rest of the town on edge. She can’t imagine what Pearl possibly could have had that is worth stealing. But when Jill’s safety is threatened, she and Garrett must join forces to unearth Pearl’s secrets before someone else—someone dangerous—gets there first. Garrett may have been the last man Jill wanted to see, but now, she may not want to let him go.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too Sweet with Silly Secrets 31 Aug 2013
By Book Gannet TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I expected to like this story, it's just the sort of thing I like to unwind with - prodigal child returning from the big city, comes face-to-face with an old friend and realises there's unfinished business to deal with. In essentials this tale runs true to type, but there are a few problems.

Like why did Jill and Garrett break up in the first place? Their reasons are mostly implied through various accusations throughout the book, but I would have liked to have known exactly what happened. Especially the part that Bradley played. It's all so vague and stupid. I can't see why two people who have been together forever would have fallen apart like that, all on the accusations of a stranger.

I also wondered why they weren't already married, since they were clearly so committed and were both apparently the marrying type.

That was the biggest problem I had, but there were others - continuity issues, such as the wood incident never being mentioned again, and a rapidly healing shoulder, amongst others. The 'treasure' plot was daft and obvious, and Jill's whole relationship with Bradley was just farcical. There were also a few weird instances where internal monologues were scattered throughout the dialogue, which were clunky and a bit cringeworthy.

Maybe this writer's style didn't quite work for me, but this whole book just seemed ridiculous. The things that happen, the slow speed at which the characters work things out, the ineptitude of the local police... gah.

No, sorry, this one didn't work for me. I won't be returning to Adams Grove anytime soon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Romance and Mystery 17 Dec 2012
By Mrs. C. Colbert VINE VOICE

This book is set in Southern America. I found the characters a little bit too wholesome but otherwise the book was easy reading and uplifting. It is a story about trust, love and respect. About going back home and finding your true self. Whilst this might sound cheesy, the book is not. There are twists and turns, laughter and romance.A good book.

I really, really love this book. The characters are great, the story has sufficient twists and turns to keep up the interest of the reader - and it's just so sweet. It's kind of like how life should be - and made me want to move to Adams Grove and befriend all the locals!!! Roll on Book Two.

I loved the small town, Southern American setting and this book had a very warm heart. It was full of twists and turns, had some great comic moments and well-written romantic suspense. If you like this you'll love Lover in Law.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Tea and Secrets (An Adams Grove Novel) 22 May 2014
By G. Archer VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Sweet Tea and Secrets by Nancy Naigle is set in the small town of Adams Grove, Virginia.
Jill Clemmons and Garrett Malloy were childhood sweethearts until Jill breaks it off after a misunderstanding. Leaving her beloved grandma Pearl, her only relative and Adam Groves’ matriarch, Jill moves away to work for Bradley Kase in the “big city” at one of his charities and they move in together.
When Jill receives the unexpected news that Grandma Pearl has died she goes back to Adams Grove for the funeral and moves back into their home despite break-ins at the house which have unsettled the town. Jill learns that Pearl had secrets and as the story unfolds, she also discovers that Bradley is not the person she thought he was. (I have to be honest and comment that a blind man on a galloping horse could have seen that and at times Jill’s naivitie is frustrating!)
Although Sweet Tea and Secrets was predictable, it was a “nice story” and one which really didn’t require a lot of thought. It had ups and downs, happy, sad and mysterious events but one of the things which I liked was that Pearl, an immensely warm and likeable character, was part of it throughout even though her presence in the story is short-lived . The recipes for some of her infamous creations are included at the end of the story for anyone interested in trying them. All in all a gentle, easy read suitable for some “me time” or holiday reading which I consider worthy of 3.5 stars.

This is a nice story.

It is a bit predictable in some ways, but the characters in the story are developed well, and it's easy as a reader to feel involved with the book.

It has a bit of everything, romance, drama, mystery.

An easy to read and enjoyable story.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sickly sweet tea and clunky plot 27 April 2014
By elsie purdon TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I did not enjoy this novel at all. I hoped it would be a light and easy read to relax and enjoy but found myself sometimes confused and mostly bored.
The writing is not so good. Either there is too much detail that you get drowned and lost, or the scenes don't seem to follow on in order.
Jill Clemmon's is angry with boyfriend Bradley for withholding the sad news of her Grandma Pearl's death for an evening for his own selfish reasons. fair enough. jill returns to Adams Grove in America's Deep South for the funeral and has to see her ex boyfriend Garrett, though we have no idea why he is her ex as everyone including the late grandma Pearl says they were meant to be together, soul mates.
Nothing in the writing had me convinced about those two though. The plot was flimsy and old fashioned. There is a clause in Pearl's will that forces the two to spend time together, yawn.
Bradley is a bounder, revealed in a tacky sex scene that just didn't fit with any other part of the story.
The writing is often sickly sweet, put me off I'm afraid, well that and the boring plot.
Only one star. Worse, I have already picked the follow up book to review so I have to read that one too !
