Firstlight G9 40 Watt Halogen Paris Floor Lamp, Antique Brass

Was looking for a reading lamp for granddad, and quickly discounted the �200+ items (with silly names) as being pretentious, over-priced nonsense. A read of a few reviews showed pretty comprehensively that a 'normal' halogen capsule will provide all the 'reading' light you'll need, so why this has to cost anything approaching even ONE hundred pounds is a mystery to me, let alone more than double that amount. (Horses for courses, I suspect...)

So, which reasonably-priced 'normal' halogen floor lamp would it be? Reading the specs showed that most held a 40W G9 halogen capsule, which basically tells me there isn't anything to choose between them in terms of light output or quality.

One feature did, however, stand out as being genuinely useful - a dimmer. This narrowed the selection down quite a bit, so I was left choosing between a 'touch' control or full manual adjustment.

And I chose 'manual'. Why? Because the 'touch' dimmers seemed to have only one dimmed setting, and if this proved to be too dark for reading, then you'd be left with the only option of always having to have it on full. (And, I could see granddad forgetting it was touch control, and going bonkers when the light turned itself on and off every time he tried to move the lamp angle...)

One lamp immediately stood out - this one. It not only had the right colour finish, but it provided a full dimmer adjustment - the order was placed.

It arrived within a couple of days in a compact but heavy package. This suggested decent quality, and I wasn't disappointed.

Superb brushed 'antique' brass finish - highly lustrous and superbly finished. It has a heavy base which will keep the whole thing very secure and stable, and I was pleased to find that the on/off/dimmer control was silky-smooth in operation (you rotate it fully anti-clockwise to 'click' it off. This does mean you can't leave it 'pre-set' to a preferred dimmed level, but that's no real hardship.)

Easy to adjust the lighting angle, and there's a little 'pole' handle to use for this, as the halogen WILL become very hot in use. No 'glass' cover over the actual bulb - it's fully exposed, so take care!

Nice translucent cable too, and even a see-through plug top!

Really - Nan is really pleased, and I am genuinely impressed too.

ASSEMBLY: To avoid twisting the flex as you screw the stand tubes together, start with the top (lamp 'swan neck') part, and screw on the first pole (remove the black safety end pieces first!) whilst holding the cable as it comes out the end to stop it turning - easy to do. Then screw on the second tube as before, and finally offer up the heavy base; get the thread catching a couple of turns to secure and then hold the cable as it comes out the base's bottom to - again - prevent the cable from turning as you tighten it up fully.

The finished lamp is nicely low-key, but very classy.

And it works a treat - if you are toying with getting such a reading lamp, don't hesitate; you won't believe how much more relaxing it is to read with a decent light source. The halogen colour is a pure white, but not a 'cold' one. Obviously, as you turn it down it'll become even warmer, and will also extend the life of the capsule x number of times!

A cracking buy.

I needed a light to do close up art work and this product is excellent. With the flexible body I can move it to exactly the angle I want and I have been amazed at just how bright one little bulb is.

Absolutely delighted with this lamp. Easy to assemble, gives good, bright, adjustable light, ideal for reading or working. May well order another after Christmas festivities are over. Would recommend the lamp to anyone wanting a good bright light at a sensible price.
