4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful things don't ask for attention 5 Mar 2014
Format:DVD
Ben Stiller’s Walter Mitty of 2013 bears a passing resemblance to Danny Kaye’s of 1947, and none at all to James Thurber’s original creation (in which a hen-pecked husband, who inhabits a short story about five pages long, is sent out to buy overshoes and dog biscuits while his wife has her hair done). So those professional critics who complain (and some have) that Stiller doesn’t capture Thurber’s nuanced social commentary are talking through their hats.

Nor, as far as I know, did Thurber leave behind Tolkienesque appendices of the sort that might underpin the two hour rollercoaster on show. It is a story of derring-do, adversity and high-jinks only matched by the development trajectory of this script. In its decade-long passage through the hands of agents, writers, producers, studios and directors, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was also dunked in the arctic ocean, shot at by Afghan warlords and abandoned in Himalayan wastelands, before falling for its final release into the loving arms of Ben Stiller who found himself not only leading the cast but directing the film as well.

Usually films with this sort of midwifery are a disaster. This one’s a peach. I’m inclined to give Stiller much of the credit, though I dare say Steve Conrad’s screenplay didn’t write itself.

On a big screen, it is stunning. This is what Hollywood blockbusters should be like: imaginative, inventive, engaging, beautiful, sweeping, clever, well observed, well acted, and fun. Stiller demonstrates himself to be a subtler comic than many of his peers (Jim Carey was associated with this picture at one point) and an outstanding actor: his transition from biro-pocketed nerd in the basement to swashbuckling global explorer is a joy to behold.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 6 Jan 2014
By Keir
Format:Blu-ray
I'm not sure what I was expecting before seeing this at the cinema. I hadn't read reviews and I'm not exactly Ben Stiller's biggest fan. But I absolutely loved it. It's a nice story about a man trying to make something of his life, and it's just really charming. Some of the scenes are superb and the Icelandic and Himalayan locations are beautiful. Ben Stiller is at his best here, as director, writer and actor; it's great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life's Quintessence.. 20 Jan 2014
By Peter Buckley VINE VOICE
Format:DVD
Where Thurber's Mitty was a hen-pecked husband, and Kaye's Mitty was a magazine editor with a nagging fiancée, Stiller plays a bachelor, living with mom (Shirley MacLaine), and a new antagonist in the form of boss Ted Hendricks (Adam Scott).
Here is a taste of what Walter is up against: "Never fun, this stage, but we do have ahead of us the privilege of publishing what will be the very last issue of Life magazine. We just received a telegram from Sean O'Connell, who has never been willing, I'm told, to speak with the executives here. Well, he broke his long silence and shared his thoughts with us... "I expect full consideration of negative 25 for cover. My most grand. The quintessence of life"...
So our cover will probably be the most famous ever because it will have the big quintessence of all time..." More than a little of Michael Scott, Steve Carell's character from The Office.
I found the film to be very enjoyable, fantastic settings, music and feel-good factor, well worth watching. I reluctantly say in criticism that the product placement/sponsorship I know we have to get used to today was over the top at times, to the detriment of continuity, but also available time to develop the other characters, or even much of the slowly, slowly growing relationship between Walter and Cheryl(Kristen Wiig). We needed to see more of her. Took me a while to place where I had recently heard her voice (Despicable Me 2 (Lucy) . Perhaps because the film cries out for greater substance, or that I may be a bit of a Walter Mitty myself, I have already worked out a sequel in my own imagination...

5.0 out of 5 stars best film of 2013? 29 Jan 2014
Format:DVD
Never have I stood up and clapped at the end of a film in a Cinema , I didn't care that it was embarrassing this film was beautiful fantastic acting, wonderful cinematography, A great mix of emotions throughout the film and not to mention the gorgeous soundtrack. This film you will either love or feel a bit odd about there's nothing to dislike or hate! the film is basically a modern Forrest Gump like tale and it's a fantastic one at that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming 15 Jan 2014
By Mr. R. W. Graham VINE VOICE
Format:Blu-ray
This remake of the classic Danny Kaye film bares little resemblance to the film i remember watching as a kid. Ben Stiller plays Walter Mitty, who works for Life magazine. He daydreams about romancing coworker Cheryl and fighting his boss in epic superhero style battles. One day Walter gets caught up in a real life adventure when the negative print of a photograph along with its photographer goes missing and Walter sets off to find the missing phototgrapher. A good performance from Ben Stiller who also does a good job behind the camera along with good performances from Kristen Wigg as Cheryl, Shirley Mcclaine as Walter's mother and Sean Penn as the missing photographer, this is a fun, funny and heartwarming feel good film and probably Ben Stiller's best film.

1.0 out of 5 stars A pointless remake
Needless, pointless. The original without the heart and with additional needless cgi. A money spinner rather than a sincere film.
