5.0 out of 5 stars Eastbound and Up, Up, Up 12 Nov 2009
By D. Wain
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Wow. Here's something you don't find everyday - truly great television. I've just finished watching this series on FX Channel and I'm desperate for Season 2 (which is apparently going ahead, and I hear at 13 episodes rather than the 6 of this first season, but don't quote me on that.)
It was advertised on Sky as being "The new comedy by Will Ferrell" but I don't see that its BY Will Ferrell at all. He appears in two episodes and co-produces it, but the real star is Danny McBride, and he is the reason why I watched this. I've been a fan of his since seeing him in David Gordon Green's excellent "All the Real Girls". I always was unsure whether McBride was acting or just being himself, which is, I suppose, the mark of a great actor. I didn't realise that this show was directed (the first 3 episodes anyway) by David Gordon Green too.
The thing is, this is a very coarse, offensive show. There are hundreds of 'f' words, nudity and drug-taking. Its easy to dismiss this as a cheap laugh, until you watch two or three episodes. This is a very well-written story about love, life and, in particular, the age at which a man realises he just isn't what he used to be anymore but he isn't yet ready to accept it.
I found myself really caring about a loudmouth, obnoxious, mulletted redneck and by the final episode I was actually shouting advice at the screen.
That's not to say that this isn't outrageously funny, because it will make you laugh out loud once you have stopped cringing at the political incorrectness of Kenny Powers. The supporting cast are brilliant too; witness the transformation of Stevie.
In summary, please don't miss this show, and certainly don't just watch one or two episodes and turn off in disgust. Watch the whole thing and feel the love. Watch it and you'll most certainly be IN.

5.0 out of 5 stars Legendary TV 23 July 2010

Eastbound is more of a movie than TV season. Watching the DVD boxset emphasises this as you'll find yourself playing episodes back to back to back...

Just epic comedy genius that experiments on just how bad that it can make an individual act. Kenny Powers is one obnoxious guy and....you've gotta love him for it.
Follow Kenny on his journey from the heights of the World Series as he falls from grace out his own doing.

It is Will Ferrell-esque comedy so if that's not your thing maybe give it a miss but otherwise, highly recommended fresh HBO humour. Can't wait for season 2 which is rumoured to be in production.

5.0 out of 5 stars "..BEST SHOW ON EARTH.." 24 April 2012
Format:DVD
This is absolutely one of the funniest TV shows ever made!! Possibly thee best!! Danny McBride is an awesome actor and a very, very funny man, he plays the part of Kenny powers with so much passion and makes him so believable, the comedy is very on the ball with great random gags and mostly vulgar humour thats always laugh out loud from start to finish, if you love great comedy then you must see this!! Offensive to some but pure genius none the less!! Comedy gold!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The agony and the ecstasy 1 Sep 2010
Format:DVD
Wow. Simply stunning comedy from Danny McBride and Co. This fabulous show mixes the daft, the awkward and the plain ol' offensive in six episodes that depict the difficult slide of one man's outrageous but fragile ego into reality. Almost.

What happens when some talent gets you so far up your own backside, you consume yourself and the the only way back out is covered in the most God awful mess you can imagine? Kenny Powers knows. One of the greatest tragi-comic characters ever created, his story is well worth every gut-turning moment of confrontation and false realisation for the snowballing joy that comes with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eastbound and Down Series 1 20 July 2010
Format:DVD
Pure unadulterated fun! Danny McBride of Pineapple Express fame plays a retired baseball star that is living in an all too believable bubble, that he is the most talented and sexiest man on the planet. From this premise ensues a masterclass in comededic timing, one liners and out n out crassness. Set your brow a little low and be prepared to be entertained by 'Dr cock n balls' or 'the man with the golden penis'!! Oh and look out for a hilarious Will Ferrell cameo..infact its probabaly the funniest hes been since playin Ron Burgundy in Anchorman. Bring on season 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding TV comedy. 3 July 2010
By Ernie TOP 1000 REVIEWER

For me this was easily the best TV comedy of the past five years. If you like shows like the U.S version of `The Office', `Curb Your Enthusiasm' and `I'm Alan Partridge' then this will be right up your street. It's very similar in style to Jody Hill's `The Foot Fist Way' revolving around the character of `Kenny Powers' an egotistical, obnoxious and thoroughly offensive washed up baseball star, who after a fall from grace returns to his small Carolina home town and is forced to take a job as substitute gym teacher while he plans his return to the big leagues. The series is shot in chronological order and is effectively a three hour film edited into six consistently funny half hour episodes. The quality of writing is great, Danny McBride is utterly superb and the supporting cast is top notch. A must see comedy!
