5.0 out of 5 stars four lions with an open mind 7 Sep 2011
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
Watched this hoping it would make me see how rediculous suicide bombers were. But unfortunately I liked the characters! There are some side-splitting moments that make me involuntarily giggle every time I think of them. (embarassing sitting on a bus!!!) Still too radical a subject for me, but an extremely well acted film. Poignant in placces too. Watch it with an open mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Lionheart of a film 17 Oct 2011
By Lat
Format:DVD
Lets start with the film itself before we review the dvd. Hilarious. No doubts. This was a risque subject matter but it was handled well. The bufoon bombers are typical uneducated who seriously dont have a clue why they are doing what they are doing and this probably goes to all these idiots that blow themselves up taking innocent lives with them. These people are cowards and this film exposes their cowardice in a laughable manner.

The character of Barry is priceless. Easily the funniest in the film. They should make a movie about the buffons in the BNP too and call that cowardly lions because I think a film exposing their idiocy needs to be done.

The dvd itself:- No commentary. Definately should have had a commentary track. The deleted scenes are hilarious too. Cannot understand why they were deleted other than timing reasons possibly but good to see these included.

Other extras include a few short making off interviews.

The cover is a bit offputting to any marketing campaign. In the front is a picture of a crow. In the back a character from the film dressed as an Ostrich. The title "Four Lions" but other than that nothing to explain what this film was all about. Very strange! Clearly bad campaigning for a great film.

I only bought it because I had seen it on television. If I did not know the subject matter I would not have a clue what this was all about.

However buy this as this is British comedy at its best

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant 15 Sep 2011

comedy is all pervasive - even when it comes to the hot topic of religeous extremism and terrorism. the film isn't without its faults but its 5* simply based on its brave approach to the topic. nigel lindsay for me is especially brilliant in this. a must buy

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Hilarious 9 April 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
The film is about a group of incredibly inept suicide bombers and their struggle to become martyrs. An interesting premise for a comedy but Four Lions makes it work fantastically. The film attracted lots of controversy and given the subject matter that is not surprising. It treads a fine line but one of the reasons it works is because it takes such a serious and controversial subject and has a bit of fun with it in a world where everyone is stereo-typically inept. It doesn't try to make a political statement (other than perhaps about free speech and that nothing should be off limits in the realm of comedy), it doesn't mock the victims or the jihadis, it even makes you care about the characters and it most importantly never forgets that it is a comedy pure and simple. To summerise this is one of the best comedies I've seen in a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great film. 26 Dec 2011

A comedy about suicide bombers is not the easiest type of undertaking but this one is right on the mark.
Brilliant acting. Brilliant writing. Illustrates the fact that most suicide bombers in quest of the promised virgins in heaven
are virgins themselves and not all that bright.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another British Comedy Classic! 11 Oct 2011
By S. Nair
Format:DVD
Didn't know a thing about this film, never even heard of it, I think I must have been out the country at the time. I saw it on TV initially but bought it straight away!! I haven't cried with laughter like that from a film in a while. Brilliant film. I didn't think it was offensive unless you really nit-pick in my opinion. Anyway I think its a satire of the issue as a whole and was well done and highlights a lot of things as well as being brilliantly written and acted I must say. Highly Recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very clever film 8 Sep 2011
Format:DVD
There's not much I can add to 122 (and counting) other reviews, but do make an effort to watch this film. Morris and his ensemble have truly got under the skin of their characters. I lived for years among this exact demographic group, only 40 miles from Sheffield, and can attest to the perfect portrayal of the bizarre logic and blind reasoning which characterizes these otherwise generally likeable young people (except the convert, of course). The police response is 'funny because it's true' too. It's also poignant, but no spoilers here.
Watch it and laugh, then think.

5.0 out of 5 stars Film as a Weapon 6 Sep 2011
By Dr. Delvis Memphistopheles TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Death on the Installment Plan and Journey to the End of the Night finely sieved through the rotary blender and then distilled as an acidic bitter bile, finally infused with helium and blasted with nitrous oxide, finally transported to the 21st century.

This is as raw and open as it gets, taking on a popular herd theme, to expose the sense of the deep absurd in a caustic acidic tale of self immolation. The Police attacks on the wrong suspects, absolutely red dot, spot on. My neighbour was one of them- they released him 12 hours later- after poking red dots through our windows for 12 hours....sorry wrong house!

The picture of the terrorists as young lads gone awry, was and is prescient. The long term effect of P bashing in the 60's, finally has turned around, wanting to bite back. Training camps reminded me of Baader Meinhof clash of cultures in that epic, the clash of cultures. The notion of bombing your own, the idea coming from the convert was also grim with its elucidation as he floored his clapped out Sierra. The attention to detail in this film was mesmerising the costumes, the symbolism of the clapped out Ford Sierra, the water pistols, the drone bomber, the fake attack by the would be bomber with party bombs as a stunt all have absurd reality stamped upon them. This film cracked a whip against every stereotype constructed over the past 40 years, then with gale force wind it blew it apart.

A finer piece of anarchistic film making has yet to be made. This when you connect to the groove is the funniest gross political film ever made.

We got tired of watching this film. After a while the jokes just blurred together. And the actress from Nighty Night has a very minor role, nothing hilarious.
