Product Description

Product Description

"The Mayflower: A Voyage from Hell" .The writer Kevin Jackson looks at the reality behind the mythic status of the Mayflower - and the journey that 'created' the New World. Most of the voyagers of that famed 1620 crossing of the Atlantic were not in fact religious pilgrims, but people intent on forging a better life for themselves in the virgin territory of America's east coast. 130 hardy souls were confined in a space no bigger than a tennis court, braving the 'Northern' crossing, without any firm idea of what awaited them in the New World. A riveting account of the sailing that changed the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and mercifully brief. 1 April 2013

Sometimes it's good to have a small book about a big subject. The voyage of the Mayflower carries enough weight of history to inspire volumes of fat tomes but sometimes you simply want to know stuff like - what were the cabins like? and the weather? did they take pets? and how did they manage with going to the loo in stormy weather?
This brisk and unflinching account of who boarded a leaky old ship at the wrong end of the sailing season for a hellish journey to an uncharted shore, why they did it and what happened next would be a perfect primer for further reading of American history. Or if you read for the fun of it, it's just a really interesting little book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read that trots along at a good pace 31 Aug 2013
Really entertaining book. It lays out the story leading up to the famous voyage, as well as how the settlers got on after they arrived, and what happened to the famous ship afterwards.
An interesting read even if you aren't into history

5.0 out of 5 stars America's illegal immigrants 28 Mar 2013

Fascinating account of the voyage to America of the Mayflower pilgrims, fetishised in America's founding myths as a group of right minded people fleeing religious persecution in England (boo, hiss!). Turns out they were largely Dutch chancers, economic migrants in search of the buck and the freedoms that having money bestows. An eye-opening and iconoclastic read. I love it when history does this.

Bit of a let down as I was expecting a tale of the voyage but little of that is in here.

Not bad for a History Lesson, really quite informative and accurate.
It was not too stodgy and it flowed nicely, if your interested in the Mayflower worth a look

2.0 out of 5 stars More of a starter than a main course. 25 Jun 2013

Well, I was really looking forward to an in-depth examination of the Mayflower episode, the background, historical development and importance of this seminal event. Even a critique of whether it was such a seminal event. Got instead a short summary that left me wanting a lot more than the book gave me. Not recommended - but it did spark an interest.

The book provided interesting new information on the colonization of North America. I would have liked more detail and information on the source of the facts given. Without these it is difficult to take the history too seriously.

Extremely well researched and dramatically told history lesson written with a light but knowledgeable touch. The perfect short read - would love the author to pen the hefty doorstep version.
