3.0 out of 5 stars Attractiveness 5 stars - Functionality 2 stars 25 Aug 2012

Amazon Vine Review (What's this?)
This Delonghi cordless kettle is certainly attractive with a sturdy feel to it and a clever design to the base which stores the cord. It has a quaint, old fashioned look but still remains sleek and expensive looking.

The spout is fairly small, so whilst pouring water is well controlled, you do have to remove the lid to add more water. The storage base is disappointing and at odds with the kettle; it's made of a flimsy plastic and looks very cheap and non-durable. In addition, the kettle proved a little difficult to slot onto it; making the claim that "you can set the kettle on the base at any angle and from any position" very misleading. You can't - I found myself at times having to twist the kettle slightly for it to slot into the storage base. It also doesn't help that this kettle is somewhat heavier compared to my previous one, and despite the sturdy handle I would not recommend filling it to maximum capacity to anyone with frail wrists or a poor grip. Lastly this kettle may bring water to the boil fairly quickly, but it is ridiculously loud when doing so.

4.0 out of 5 stars This kettle boils water - at a price 20 Aug 2012

Amazon Vine Review (What's this?)
Object of great beauty 5 star. Function 4 Safety 3

I concur wholeheartedly with a previous reviewer who pointed out that what you are paying for is pretty well the aesthetics of this kettle.

And I must say, it looks gorgeous. It replaces a previous kettle Haden 14594 1.7 L Capacity White Plastic Cordless Kettle 2200 W which won no prizes at all for aesthetic appeal but reliably, if volubly, also boiled water. Competent, safe, functional. But I didn't get much pleasure from looking at it.

As I don't need to stare admiringly at a kettle, I would be unlikely in these straitened times to want to shell out the considerable extra expense for this gorgeously appealing piece. But, if kettle art is your thing, and it matches the decor of your own kitchen, go for it. Its slightly old fashioned curvy, rather than space age shape and design, and the beautiful Caramac Chocolate type colour (ah, you remember that too - like me, showing your age!) will make you want to reach out and stroke it. But BEWARE this feels much hotter on the outside, when it has just boiled, than a plastic kettle. It will however purr nicely for you, as it is boiling, if you stroke it, as you want to do, wearing oven gloves. It isn't whisper quiet, but it is certainly several notches quieter than my previous kettle.

The handle is a lovely wide grip, and felt very natural to hold, the on-off lever button is also invitingly tactile - so I'm sure you'll keep it well away from small fingers who might find it irresistible.

What else (the gorgeous visuals aside) is worth the price? Well, for me the main plus has to be the 360 degree functional swivel on the base.

3.0 out of 5 stars Design over functuality 19 Aug 2012

Amazon Vine Review (What's this?)
The most obvious observation right out the box is that this kettle is a lot lighter in colour than the photo on the site suggests. I'd describe it as more of a dark tan than the brown it appears - there's more yellow in the finish. Other colours are available.

You can, of course get a kettle for a lot less than this one, so is it worth the added value price? I'm not sure it is. Some basics first - time taken to boil 1.7 L from tap to boiling - 3.02 mins. That's not bad, but not exceptional. Noise wise - it's quieter than my old kettle but it's certainly not as quiet as some I've heard. You can hold a conversation over it boiling but if you were on the phone, you'd still want to leave the room. Again, it's OK but not exceptional.

Basically you are paying for design. So is it any good? Well, it's light and reasonably nice in the hand. It has some nice safety features, notably if you take it off the stand before it has boiled (say to make coffee) it doesn't go back on once you return it, empty to the stand. Nice.

The lid is tight fitting and metal - ie it gets hot. If you want to re-fill it quickly after boiling, it isn't easy to do. The handle is OK - basically there are two natural ways to pick it up - either you have your thumb under the handle or on top of it. Go with option one. If you naturally put your thumb on top, it gets steam burnt slightly (because of the bell shape you have to tip it further than you would a straight sided kettle). It's definitely designed to fill by lifting the lid. That might sound mind numbingly obvious, but I often like to fill via the spout. OK, I know that's "wrong" but it's convenient. Here though the spout is narrow and it's not really an option. They don't want me to do that.

Great looking kettle, much admired, and slightly out of the ordinary.... It blends so much better in the kitchen than a normal one,,, so well worth the money..... Well packaged, good delivery, and am absolutely delighted..... When my toaster needs replacing I will purchase the De'Longhi Vintage one to match the kettle.... Gorgeous.

Wonderful kettle. Boils fast and looks good. Only issue is the insulation is poor as the outside and lid gets extremely hot. Be careful to only touch the handle once boiled

OK but takes a longer time to boil than other kettles. Large base means it requires more water than needed for one cup use.

Matches my toaster and compliments my kitchen. It does not however boil for long and I think it could boil water a bit longer.

This "vintage" style kettle from Delonghi is a nice looking thing, its light and simple in its style but enough to look a bit different from other kettles. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Great kettle, shame about colour
Not entirely sure what the 'vintage' aspect of this kettle is - perhaps it's that it isn't entirely chrome or see-through with LEDs like 'modern' kettles. Read more
