Synopsis

The Great Gatsby" follows would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without of the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

5.0 out of 5 stars 20s glamour with a modern twist 8 Dec 2013
By mummy spoon TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was reluctant to see this film as I dislike period films which aren't totally in keeping with the time, the sets, the costumes, the music and the dialogue, I notice if they don't fit. With this adaption of The Great Gatsby however, I was so captured by the breathtaking visuals, I didn't care, in fact I loved it all, it worked somehow to form the perfect film.
The cast are all perfectly selected, the sets and visuals are amazing and the score is one of the best I have heard, I honestly can't fault it, I have now started reading the book and I am interested to see how they compare.
As for the Blu-ray itself, there are tons of special features, including several interesting and in-depth documentaries.

5.0 out of 5 stars A feast for the eyes! 24 Jun 2013
By Lola
Format:Blu-ray
Firstly, please do not let the title of the review fool you - Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" is not just a visually stunning production, it is a great piece of cinematography, wonderfully adapted script and first class acting by the leading cast as well as all the extras. Mr Luhrmann's is one maverick of director, who never shied from over the top productions, and together with great (truly fatastic!) acting by Leonardo DiCaprio and the amazing soundtrack recorded by the most famous names in the contemporary pop - this is a miracle recipe for the greatest Gatsby!

"The Great Gatsby" is visually striking, which is no more and no less that we've come to expect from a Baz Lurhmann's film. Lurhmann never held back from producing and directing stunning works of art. But, compared to his previous works (perhaps with the exception of Romeo + Juliet [DVD] [1996]), which were beautiful and entertaining, but somewhat lacking depth, "The Great Gatsby" has all the important components of a great film.

Lurhmann's attention to detail is admirable, the Scott Fitzgerald's book is read through the cinematography, the director is faithful to the writer's work. Baz Lurhmann is truly pushing the envelope in portraying the overblown madness of the twenties' glamorous living. You can feel the craziness, you experience the insanity, the hysterics, you are living for the day. But beyond its themes of wealth and craziness and obsessing on living for the moment, "The Great Gatsby" is a wonderful, beautiful and tragic love story. It's a twisted romance. It's an instant classic.

DiCaprio is amazing as Gatsby. He is charismatic and charming and dark and complex and so in love with Daisy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing movie. 2 Feb 2014

Loved it in the cinema, loved it on DVD. Modern music to a 1920 set up - seems odd - but goes together very well.

4.0 out of 5 stars A 20th Century classic on steroids... 18 Nov 2013
Format:DVD
For those who know nothing about The Great Gatsby - never read the book or seen previous screen versions of it - count your blessings for you'll be able to soak all of this up without being bothered by whether it's faithful to Scott Fitzgerald's literary masterpiece or whether it's better or worse than previous attempts at bringing it to the big screen. You will, almost certainly, be knocked out by its fantastic sets, its clever plot and its superb love story because as a stand-alone experience, free of any preconceptions, it's an exciting, gripping and deeply moving movie.

For the less fortunate - those who have expectations of what a screen version of this novel should be - things are much more difficult. For, while this is fundamentally the same story that Fitzgerald wrote it's not what he wrote - key parts of it have been missed out, much of what's been kept in has been exaggerated, and quite a lot of it simply isn't in the book. It's not The Great Gatsby as you want or hoped it would be and much gnashing of teeth will almost certainly follow as you witness scene after scene being twisted or, worse still, added-in for dramatic effect.

In rock music terms what it is is a big production "cover version" and, in the end, that's how it should be judged because it's quite clear right from the opening scenes - a sequence that isn't mentioned or referred to anywhere in the book - that Baz Luhrmann has no intention of producing a faithful interpretation of it. What he wants to do is to take Fitzgerald's quite brilliant story and use it as the basis for a fast & furious cinematic "work-out" - a huge spectacle, full of CGI graphics, vast sets, swathes of exciting, technically complex audio-visual virtuosity and, on the way, a great deal of genuine drama.

1.0 out of 5 stars Stick to the book or Robert Redford film classic 27 Feb 2014
Format:DVD
There is nothing about this film that is appealing. The story and characters get lost in the bling and 'style' of the production. I love this book, I love the story, I love the characters and I even love the Robert Redford gatsby but I was so bored and uninterested by this film it is sad if this will be your first or only introduction to a classic. Don't even go there!!!
