Book Description

10 May 2012
May, 1992. Hana is twelve years old when her older sister Atka puts her on a UN evacuation bus fleeing the besieged city of Sarajevo. Thinking they will be apart for a short time, they make a promise to each other to be brave. But as the Bosnian war escalates and months go by without contact, their promise becomes deeply significant. Hana is forced to cope as a refugee in Croatia, while Atka and their younger siblings battle for survival in a city overwhelmed by crime and destruction. Then, when Atka manages to find work as a translator, events take an unexpected turn, and the remarkable events that follow change her life, and those of her family, forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very moving 29 Aug 2013

I read this book prior to visiting Sarajevo. I am glad I did. It is a very moving story of love and courage and says a lot about the people of Sarajevo and the horrors they had to endure whilst the world looked on. Found it difficult to put down and it has been on loan to friend after friend since we returned from our trip six months ago. Well worth the read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Goodbye Sarajevo 18 Aug 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A moving account of a Muslim family caught up in war-torn Sarajevo. All of brutality, futility, hope, despair and love is here - topical themes these days as civilians seem to be increasingly caught up in internecine wars. How would we react?
Ultimately a rewarding read. It is the humanity that triumphs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Two sisters' stories of the war in Bosnia 8 April 2013
Format:Paperback
The true story of two sisters separated by the war in Bosnia. 21-year-old Atka stays in Sarajevo during the siege. Because she can speak English, Atka picks up work as a translator for foreign journalists covering the war. Through her work, she meets Andrew Schofield, a New Zealand photojournalist who later becomes her husband. Meanwhile, Atka's 12-year-old sister Hana, evacuated from Sarajevo one month into the war, has to come to terms with life as a refugee in Croatia. Atka and Hana alternate telling their stories chapter by chapter.

This book vividly depicts the heartache of families torn apart by the war, of family members not knowing, sometimes for months at a time, the whereabouts and circumstances of other family members. In one particularly vivid scene, Atka is in New Zealand watching a news report on TV about the latest marketplace bombing in Sarajevo when, to her horror, she glimpses her mother's face amongst the crowd.

Finally, with the help of Andrew's parents, Atka and Hana's family reunites in New Zealand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read! 22 Feb 2013

I really enjoyed this book. Brings home what the people in Sarajevo went through, while the rest of the world went about its daily business. Told in a very factual, down to earth way, the terrible reality of not being able to eat for two days, watching your two year old brothers get thin and malnourished, and burning your jeans to keep warm in winter.

Everyone should read, especially those in politics, whose decisions often can make other people suffer!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great 2 Nov 2013

What a great story from two different perspectives of the war. A back and forth story from each sister's perspective; one that had to stay in Sarajevo and experience the fighting first hand, and the other that was forced to leave a family, a home, and familiarity. Brings to light a war that was too easily ignored by media and the rest of the world. Very moving
