Book Description

29 Aug 2013

Country girl Tara is whisked off to Sixties London to become a pop star; there she is dressed, she is shown off at Chelsea parties, photographed by the best. She meets songwriters, singers, designers, and records her song, and falls in love.

But behind the buzz and excitement of her success, concern about her beautiful, wild sister Lucy and the bitter relationship with their friend Matilda haunts Tara. Their past friendship is broken, and among the deceptions and the strangeness of both their marriages, the buried secrets keep on reappearing.

The brilliant new world of fashion and music, of mini skirts and rock 'n' roll, of the Marquee Club and The Palladium, is also one of love and heartache.

More About the Author

Eva Rice was born in London and grew up in Oxfordshire. She went to boarding school in Wiltshire, and then to Bristol University from which she graduated with a third class degree. She wrote her first book 'Who's Who in Enid Blyton' in 1997, while wrapping presents for cash by day. Her first two works of fiction failed to set the literary world ablaze, but she was lucky enough to be included in Richard and Judy's book club for her third novel 'The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets' which was Runner Up in their 'Best Read' award 2006. Her sort-of sequel to this: 'The Misinterpretation of Tara Jupp' is out now. Eva has been to Albania with Norman Wisdom, collects 1950s pony books and remains a pop music obsessive. She is still the fastest ribbon-tier in town which is handy during the festive season.

Review

'An absolutely smashing read' Marie Claire.

'Brilliantly written, hugely engaging and full of glorious detail, this book is a must-read' Heat.

'A swoon of a read ... vintage style drips from every page' Elle.

From the Inside Flap

'I am watching the beautiful people fill the village church for Matilda's wedding. I'm waiting to sing, and don't know it but everything's about to change. Playing the piano at wild parties and the six o'clock club, warm afternoons spent lying around with Digby marvelling at the vocal range of Gene Pitney are all ahead of me. I don't know yet how hard it is to record three pop songs in three hours, or how it feels to stand on the sticky floor of the Marquee, jittering with nerves next to Inigo Wallace. And the strangest thing of all is that I don't know Cherry Merrywell yet, even though I am about to become her...' Tara Jupp - vicar's daughter, singer and occasional thief - is lured to London from Cornwall in the summer of 1962 and finds herself at the start of an extraordinary time. Within hours of her arrival, she is plunged into a brilliant new world of fashion, music and heartache, all in a city where skirts are being hitched up as fast as the past is being pulled down. Can Tara succeed while still holding on to who she really is? The Misinterpretation of Tara Jupp is a welcome return for Eva Rice, whose Lost Art of Keeping Secrets is a much loved bestseller.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the wait! 23 Sep 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Sigh! I have just finished reading this after what was a very long wait (I thought Eva Rice had disappeared of the face of the planet!) especially as this book was meant to have been released a couple of years ago as 'Dragonfly Summer'. I absolutely loved 'The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets', which I consider to be a classic and can't remember how many times I have read. 'Misinterpretation' took longer to get into than 'Lost Art', but I loved all the characters and the real feel of the age. Most of all it was lovely to meet Inigo again.
Please don't leave it too long, Eva, until your next book ;)

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book! 6 Mar 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a brilliant book- it's a hefty tome, but I found myself very much caring about the protagonist. I love sagas that span a period of time, and this does that- beautifully. I read it slowly, to savour the excellence of the writing- it's moving and lyrical!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fab! 4 Dec 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was obsessed with Eva Rice's book the lost art of keeping secrets. This book weaves round the original, the characters are back, though I was little disappointed that Penelope, Charlotte and Harry (who could have so easily featured more) were mentioned so briefly and not really met properly again.
Tara and the other main characters were full of life in the way that you become accustomed to in Rice's writing. I felt at moments like all of them in the way only a wonderful writer can.
Inigo was always a brilliant character in the first book tempestuous and the epitome of a younger brother and I felt disappointed in his characters developments at first but he had grown up and becomes a fantastic character to get to know again.

A wonderful piece of escapism.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable, light-hearted tale 4 April 2013
By EA
Format:Hardcover
This book starts off painting a very detailed picture of a naive country girl, a vicar's daughter no less, obsessed with horses and living with her father and myriad of siblings. They live a simple life, and enjoy the simple pleasures on offer in their village. Until one day, Tara, with her beautiful singing voice is 'discovered', and her life moves to the big city, where she meets a cast of colourful characters, and is forced to grow up, and fast.
It's an enjoyable, light-hearted tale, with lots of humour. Some of the characters are a bit too over the top to have much realism, but the book is not really about realism, and these characters create the humour, and the plot is somewhat predictable in places, but no less enjoyable for that.
My only real criticism was the length of the book - the initial scene and character setting went on a bit too long, and you do start to wonder when something will actually happen... Tara is a very likeable character though, and you will be routing for her all the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't help it... I just love Eva Rice! 21 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I fell in love with Eva Rice's writing after coming across 'The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets' in my school library several years ago, and I was pleased that this book was just as charming and quirky as its predecessor (and I loved that Inigo, Charlotte and Penelope were back in this book too). The lead character is utterly likeable, as is her older sister Lucy and the rest of the Jupp clan. I completely agree with the author that romances are best set before the invention of mobiles and internet, and this is just such a sweet coming of age story set in the 60s and is intelligently written. I've also read 'butterfly sting' and 'standing room only' which are good, but I really hope that the author writes some more books set in the 50s/60s.
