My wonderful new Kindle

My wonderful new Kindle
I was lucky enough to receive my kindle for Christmas from my Son Mark and as an avid reader cannot believe what I have done without it. It is light, easy to read and exceptionally easy to download new books even for those of advanced years. I purchased a lovely pink cover for this item and even with that the whole thing is so compact and mobile. I would wholeheartedly recommend this product for all ages I just love mine.

I put off buying an E-reader for ages, as I love the look & feel of a real book. I was convinced that one of "those kindle things" would not be a satisfactory alternative.
However, real books take up a lot of space & if you are like me and like to keep books to read again later you eventually run out of room for them all.
So I finally took the plunge, and it arrived the following day. My first impression, after removing it from one of the easiest to open boxes I have ever encountered, was "It that it? It is rather small." Not one to be put off I turned it on. I was very pleasantly surprised to find it came pre-set up, by Amazon, with all my account details. All I had to do was enter my Wi-Fi password and select the correct dictionary. Could not have been easier.

Reading the pre-loaded user guide was a doddle. By the time I had finished I had decided that it was definitely very easy to use. The "next page" buttons are very well located, and sit just under my thumbs regardless as to which hand I hold it in, and it weighs next to nothing.
I thought the background colour a bit grey, but comparing it to a paperback a few years old showed that the book was a pale yellow with the kindle a pale grey. In other words it was no worse that a book. Stepping outside into bright sunlight the background became a much crisper white.

So, I bought a book, a cheap one, and was very impressed how quickly it downloaded. I started to read it, and a while later realised that it was as good as a book, just different.

The only thing I do not like (and it's not enough to make me not like the devise) is the very slight ghosting that occurs, and the method used to clear it. Every new page shows a very very faint impression of the previous page. Amazon (or the makers of the E-ink screens) are clearly aware of this as every few pages (4? 5?) the screen does a "self-clean" where it goes very quickly "all black, all white" to clean off the ghosting. Initially this "Black/white" flicker is off-putting, but after only a few hours I am getting used to it, and I imagine I will soon hardly notice it at all.

Pro's:
Perfect size for the hand.
Perfectly located "next page" buttons.
Light weight.
Ease of set up.
Crisp, clear text.
Long battery life.
Glare free screen.
Looks good.

Con's:
The "ghosting removal" process.
If you drop a book while reading in the bath the book will survive, I doubt this will. ;)

Overall: This is a "keeper!" and it is a more than satisfactory alternative to a real book.

Hi, I've just received my e-reader one day earlier then expected and I've now had a few hours to play around with it. Review below. I hope it helps. Thanks for reading.

Charging: First step is to load the device with some juice... basically I did not buy the special "Kindle" adaptor and I just used the mains adaptor for my Apple iPhone 3G. It worked! Battery indicator turned green i.e. fully charged after about three hours.

Configuration: Fairly straight forward and completed within minutes... not many steps, just register your device and set up the wi-fi.. pretty simple.

Buttons: It took me a while to find the off/sleep button which is located at the bottom of the device next to where the micro usb goes. Two buttons to turn the pages on either side so both lefties and right handers can use the device. Page forward and page backward buttons on either side so you can basically use the same thumb to flick through a book. Incidentally, I had to read the first page of the rather long user manual to discover this. Love the fact that I don't have to physically turn the pages any more, something which you will only understand once you try the Kindle. On the whole, it's a simple to use to navigational system.

Browser: Terrible for something like Facebook, but I guess it would be fine for a magazine and reading plain text. For someone who has used an iPhone for many years, just entering my username and password to log into FB was a nightmare and felt like I had gone back ten years - the five way central controller button and on-line qwerty keyboard just led to a really poor experience in comparison to something like an iPad. Once you have logged in, scrolling down the wall / newsfeed was not great either as the screen would constantly refresh as you scrolled down. Kindle was build for reading and the experimental browser needs a lot more work to be anything as close as the iPad mini, though it's probably best to not go there and leave that for the rest of the Kindle Fire family to fight it out.

As a Replacement for Paperbacks: Great, no questions about that, feels lighter, has a comforting rubber back, screen practically looks like a paper book as there is no glare or light emitted from the screen. The default font size is slightly smaller then an average paperback but this can be adjusted in the settings I believe. At six inches the device is a lot smaller then an average paperback too but this is not a major problem. Would be great if there were some colour, especially for the comic lovers out there, but on the whole I love my new reading device.

Channel for Purchasing Books: The Kindle Store is a joy to use and easily accessible on the device. Simply press the menu button and it's the first option. From the advertisement, the home screen looks pretty dull but it works perfectly. There's a section which resembles Apple's App store where you have top rated paid and free books side by side. The Kindle Daily Deals are also really good if you bump into a bargain. I've just bought a book for a pound. Initially downloaded the free sample and then decided to buy the book. It would have been great for the sample book to have been over written or archived, but this can easily be done by yourself when you have nothing else to do. Also, I've no idea which means of payment was used not that it matters a great deal. It is quite easy to purchase books, they download within seconds and are ready by the time you get back to the home screen. You can also subscribe to magazines and newspapers. I've tried to Metro and it's done well. Books are just as easy to browse, purchase, and are arranged and categorised to the same detail and structure as the main website. Overall five out five stars.

Extra features: You can also send documents to a kindle email address which can be set up once the device is configured. Note, this cannot be set up from the Kindle device. I sorted it out from my laptop. Four foot drop test: Not tested on device yet, but whilst still packaged it can survive being dropped out of your letter box.

I used this on my work phone and found that it started to show signs of wear within a month (as a field technician, this phone was in constant use). For the average user this would be a great product
