5.0 out of 5 stars Hardware over ergonomics
For the price at 599.99 on 01/02/2014 this is a great deal. You will not find the fast high end 2.4 GHz Intel I7 processor with 8gb of RAM for less. I bought this computer to use for at least 5 years and when comparing products my main requirements were for a fast processor and a decent amount of RAM, the 8gb of RAM is in one slot meaning later on its possible to add...

1.0 out of 5 stars unrecoverable crash twice
I purchased this machine from Amazon 3 weeks ago & at first was very happy with it. However after 2 weeks of installing my programs & data it would not boot beyond asking for the initial password. The screen went black with the power & hdd light on solid. I waited 30 minutes in case it was doing some kind of diskchk but it did not progress any further. I rebooted another...

5.0 out of 5 stars Hardware over ergonomics, 4 Feb 2014
Amazon Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Lenovo G510 15.6-inch Laptop - Black (Intel Core i7-4700QM 2.4GHz, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, Intel Integrated Graphics, DVDRW, Windows 8.1 Home Premium) (Personal Computers)
For the price at 599.99 on 01/02/2014 this is a great deal. You will not find the fast high end 2.4 GHz Intel I7 processor with 8gb of RAM for less. I bought this computer to use for at least 5 years and when comparing products my main requirements were for a fast processor and a decent amount of RAM, the 8gb of RAM is in one slot meaning later on its possible to add another 8gb in the second slot for a maximum of 16gb. My advice is to avoid laptops with slow processors and under 8gb of RAM as they will become obsolete fairly quickly.

While the hardware is great the actual ergonomic design of the case is pretty basic. There is no keyboard back light and the plastic has a rather robust feel about it. The keys feel a bit squashed together as like most modern laptops the full num pad has been added on meaning that the arrow keys, delete key and home/end keys are in a slightly different place, it took me a few documents to fully adjust but its no big deal, the fact that it feels robust means it should last.

I use this mainly for regular web surfing, work stuff and photos/video which it handles smoothly. In terms of gaming the integrated intel 4600 graphics card still runs most games made in 2013 without issues, for example aliens colonial marines is seamless and a fairly recent title.

I give it 5 stars because for the price the hardware is a deal, I'd rather have an average looking laptop that's super fast and will last than a flashy brightly coloured case with a slow running machine inside. In case you are wondering about Lenovo its Chinese company that makes all sorts of electronics from phones to TVs. They acquired IBM's PC division which Is where they got their computer knowledge base from. Lenovo Is an up and coming company looking for brand recognition in western markets which is why I think the price point for this computer is so competitive.

As everything is made in China i decided to give Lenovo a chance, anyway with computers the brand on the case is almost irrelevant as what matters more are the core components, which in this model are all proven brands. For 600 quid with an 2.4 GHz I7 and 8gb RAM you can't go wrong.

The only thing that sucks is the built in webcam, on youtube an Indian guy does a review of a version of this model and calls the camera 'pathetic' in a strong Indian accent. Every time I use the camera that's what I think, 'pathetic' for conference calls I just use a high end separate camera. Cameras are so cheap so why they didn't ship with a better one I don't know. Still it's a decent machine and should be in use for years to come.

Oh and one feature useful for me personally is the retention of the VGA cable port. Many new laptops only have HDMI and no VGA, this one has both. I need to hook up my laptop to many different tvs and projectors, a lot of them are older models and only have VGA slots.

4.0 out of 5 stars Generally good, 15 Feb 2014
Amazon Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Lenovo G510 15.6-inch Laptop - Black (Intel Core i7-4700QM 2.4GHz, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, Intel Integrated Graphics, DVDRW, Windows 8.1 Home Premium) (Personal Computers)
Pretty powerful laptop for a decent price. The Keyboard while not being back lit feels very good for a laptop keyboard, I'm also pleasantly surprised by the screen. Although not full HD as i would have preferred, the pixel density is good enough for general use.

My main complaint is with the audio jack. I ended up with two of these laptops and both have quite bad audio interference while plugged in or not, so using for media without an external DAC is not so great. I would recommend this laptop at this price point (599 at time of purchase) but be warned if you are expecting a great audio experience you may be in for some disappointment

I rebooted another couple of times with the same result. By pressing Ctrl/alt/del the task manager came onto the screen but didn't help resolve the problem. I had to resort to pressing the "one key restore" button which put the machine back to as it left the factory. This meant I had to re-input the keyboard, location, time zone etc before I could start to input my programs & data again. However before I got more than half way thru this laborious chore the same fault occurred. I cannot be sure if this is a hardware fault or the operating system (windows 8.1) but I could not trust the system anymore & returned it to Amazon. I am hopeful I will get a full refund as fortunately the fault manifested itself inside the 30 day no quibble warranty. Chris

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Laptop, 9 April 2014

Found this laptop to have some great assets but the one problem I have had so far is getting used to the touch pad and the way it works with Windows 8. Having been using Vista and a mouse for so long, it really is strange to say the least .

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor product, bad value for money, 9 April 2014
Amazon Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Lenovo G510 15.6-inch Laptop - Black (Intel Core i7-4700QM 2.4GHz, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, Intel Integrated Graphics, DVDRW, Windows 8.1 Home Premium) (Personal Computers)
Had lots of problems with the trackpad and mouse issues - both the drivers and hardware are faulty, so the trackpad can either run with the latest drivers, in which case it is impossible to remove an annoying 3 second delay before the keyboard becomes usable after touching the mouse (or vice versa), or older drivers which cause the laptop to occasionally lock out either the left click, right click or trackpad for 5-10 minutes at a time.

Otherwise, its not a special problem. Average value for money, but the problems (accompanied by the annoying, but expected pre-loading of tens of unwanted programs) make it a poor product. Don't make my mistake - buy something else.

I bought this mainly for the performance and lifetime I would get before it becomes obsolete / outdated etc.

So far I can not fault it. It came with Windows 8.1 pre installed, though there are a number of updates to apply already. Download and installation of which was very rapid.

I have installed my large suite of software with only one compatibility problem which was easily solved with the Windows runtime compatibility wizard.

With the core i7 it is fast and capable, handling everything I have thrown at it. Including some very graphics intensive work my i5 desktop struggles with.

I'm not a gamer but I think it will be very suitable due to it's fast 4 core processor and graphics capability.

The keyboard is positive and easy to use with good substantial feel and feedback. The touch-pad is accurate and responsive, though I bought a Tecknet 2.4 g cordless mouse to use with it as I prefer to use a mouse at the desktop

There is a cooling fan but it is completely silent, I had to look to see if there was one actually fitted.

It took me a while to figure out how to have the number lock enabled at boot, but this seems to be a common problem with all Win 8 / 8.1 laptops.

The case is a nice textured black which I prefer to the shiny piano black on some as it does not mark easily. It is not a flashy case design but neatly understated and practical.
If you are into big named laptops go ahead and pay two to three times the price of this for the same specification capabilities and configuration.

I think it is tremendous value and wholeheartedly recommend it.

Everything is OK except screen matrix. It's cheap and felt like from 2008/2009. Win 8 is uncool too. Design is good. Nothing more to say.

I wanted a cheap laptop but one that had some future proofing. There wasn't anything with an i7 processor, 8GB ram and a 1tb hard disk for a similar price; my only slight reservation was that it looked a slab of dull plastic. In the flesh however it looks really good, with a superb quality feel to it and is almost silent in operation. I'm still getting to grips with Windows 8.1, but overall for the money this is an excellent laptop and I would recommend it to anyone.

This is a very good laptop with great spec for the price. The laptop works really well and can handle anything I through at it with ease. I bought the machine for work so I was not really concerned about the screen resolution and graphic card. I read in some forums about wifi connectivity issues, however I have not had any issues at all. In fact the connection is strong and had no problems whatsoever. I totally recommend this machine if you are looking for a good spec machine with strong performance for under 600 pounds. I don't think you can get a fourth generation intel quad core i7 chip, 8GB RAM and 1TB hard drive laptop for this price. In all a very good laptop.
