This is a substantial case to carry a kindle about outside,it is black with a built in stand for reading or playing about on games giving you the hands free use,the hard bit was working out how to get into it as it had no instructions,glad you can search out on the internet but what i did notice was how the Kindle became very well protected once encased.
The case comes apart bit by bit once you take the rubber outer shell of it exposes the clips with arrows on, you push in the clip to release the corner of the case you can then prize the rest apart, then the whole case is open to place the Kindle inside,snap this back together again place the outer rubber case on and your away,the unit has a cover that you place over the screen side and your ready to go out,it does make carrying the Kindle about more bulky but it is well protected,the outer over cover doubles up as a stand to keep your Kindle upright for use which does not hinder your typing or playing of games,the screen is well protected and still you can use it without the outer screen protection causing any problems,with this case over the Kindle you still have access to your charging point,on off switch and volume button.
Would i have one on my Kindle?not sure if i was doing a lot of traveling about where the risk of damage was more probable then maybe but for using the kindle everyday at home no i would stick to using my origami case,the Otterbox is more bulky and does make your Kindle that bit heavier to use but the idea and concept is very good.

Otterbox make in my opinion the best covers out there for the iPad, iPhone and now kindle: If your like me you like to use your gadgets everywhere...and then either drop them, drown them or forge they're there and put something down on them. Using Otterbox has saved numerous igadgets, and will I'm sure look after my kindle too.
It fits the new fire brilliantly, and is made millimeter perfect, buttons easy to reach, water resistant and scratch proof which is great if you ever sell your old gadgets after a while to upgrade.
Basically...if you want a decent quality cover then get this. Yeah it makes the fire a bit more bulky, but the trade off is worth it.

High quality protective cover for the Kindle 8.9" HDX. There is a rubberized edge and back to the cover that peels off, then the rigid plastic inner case has two clips on each edge. Once opened, the Kindle sits perfectly inside the case, which has an integral clear plastic sheet that lies flush on top of the glass screen. Clip it shut, reattach the rubber outer and you have an excellent protective cover. The edge of the case is about 1/2 inch proud of the screen, making a good frame. There are cut-outs in the case for both the forward and rear facing cameras and the speakers, and lift-up rubber plugs to access the usb connector and earphone socket. Robust plastic buttons on the back of the case work the Kindle power and volume switches.

A rigid plastic cover clips over the screen when not in use (I guess it probably is proof against a young child opening it), and this doubles as a base, containing a hinged stand that allows you to use the Kindle near vertically upright or at a 30 degree angle in either portrait or landscape mode. Four little rubber feet set into the lid/base mean it doesn't slip.

I have to compare this with the Kindle 'origami' cover I bought with the tablet, and I must say I prefer it. The superb protective qualities aside, I find it easier and more secure to hold, with my thumb hooked over the bevelled edge of the case, and the lid/base means it stands very securely on a desk or other flat surface (I found the origami case slipped badly on my desk at work).

Yes it makes it bulkier, but I feel happier to slip it into a bag and be confident it will be undamaged - it's actually not that much heavier either. Read more ›

I was lucky enough to receive a pre-production model of this item through Amazon for evaluation and comes with the caveat that some features may have changed from the Defender series images on the Otterbox website but to be honest it looks identical to the current model.
You never realise how fragile your tablet device is until you have the misfortune to drop it, which speaking from experience is a costly and unpleasant matter. I have used a Ballistic case on my old BB playbook and these otterbox cases offer the same level of protection and reassurance that your device will be ok in terms of everyday abuse like being in your luggage or used by the kids. There were no instructions on assembly with my product and it is not easy to work out on initial inspection, thankfully the website ([...]) is there as a backup source of info and the unit once assembled is pretty straightforward. The stand is sturdy with two positions (one for typing and one for more upright viewing) but I would prefer it if the stand feature was integral to the back of the unit when the two pieces are assembled together as opposed to being separate and just resting on it. This is the only reason I deduct a star and prefer the Ballistic Tough Jacket case designs although at the time of writing this they don't currently cater for the HDX8.9
